MovieBeam

Feb 14, 2006 6:13AM PST

The WSJ reported today that MovieBeam (www.moviebeam.com) is now offering PPV releases the same day a title comes out on DVD for $3.99 each. The appliance ($199 after rebate and $29.99 activation fee) operates like a DVR but the movie is only available for 24 hours after purchase. One advantage is that for a dollar extra, you can see the title in HD. But, is it worth the purchase of a stand-alone device vs. a NetFlix/Blockbuster rental?

Would you and how much would you be willing to spend to see a movie sooner (with NetFlix, DirecTV, etc.)? Does it matter how much time you have to see a title?
Curious to see what the forum thought.

RedBox

Has anyone used RedBox or other vending machines to rent DVD's for a buck? I have and it is a really good deal if you just want the movie for one night. MovieBeam sounds good, but has it extended it's availability? I live on the Wasatch Front in Utah, which was part of the pilot run, but I didn't know anyone who had the service.

$199 for a box that already does what my DISH DVR does. Just getting the movie the day it releases on DVD???

That's just an unecessary extra box in my rack.

I'll pass.
