movie converter

so i'm trying to convert movies from a recently purchased HD camcorder to something other than mts. can anyone suggest a program for windows that i could (should) purchase to do this? i've tried using the program that came with the camera and the video ends up coming out "glitchy," i also tried using iMovie on a friends computer and the video looked relatively smooth but the quality is worse than the original. thoughts? i not crazy right? there are programs that will truly convert movies without effecting the quality and without costing me an arm and a let...right?
thank you for your help

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
