Question

Move a Computer in Sleep Mode

Oct 3, 2011 11:51PM PDT

I often have to use my laptop in a meeting, but don't like to wait for it to reboot. Can I just put it into sleep mode before leaving my office or is hibernate better?

Answer
Might depend on how long until you open it up again

and how much battery you have. After a time...and I think it's two or three hours or so...it enters hibernate anyway.

Answer
May depend on the machine. For example.

My new laptop has the new zero power sleep mode. So it's hibernate is not available anymore.

The reason I use hibernate on my old machine was it was the fastest return from a zero power state. With the new machines, this changes.

Answer
It depends

It depends on if it causes the HDD to spin down. If yes, then moving it should be fine. It's generally less desirable than completely off, since there's always a chance something may cause it to power back up, but as long as the HDD has spun down, it should be safe.
