Does anyone know of a free program that will play videos in the .mov format?

VLC Player

VLC is my default Player, but it only shows the video as a still picture. Will try Quicktime

Slim clues here but since it does not play in QT or VLC

Can you share where these came from?

I had this very old HP camera that produced a rather bizarre .MOV file that would only play with HP's supplied software.

And even worse if folk were sent this file, Windows Explorer might lock up or the Windows PC would reboot.

I didn't keep that camera!

Slim clues

This particular video came from my Daughter's Cell Phone. On VLC it shows up as a single picture sideways and on Quicktime it shows as five single pictures, but right side up. It was sent to me via Dropbox and once I got the option of watching it right in Dropbox and it was just fine, but I was never offered that option again.

To dig any further

You bet we'd have to know the cell phone details as well as what MEDIA INFO as well as VLC reports on the file.

FWIW, GOM player may play .Movs too, but I haven't tried it in awhile.

Quicktime

Quicktime doesn't work either, so maybe there is a problem with the video itself.
