Answer
You don't double-click within a browser

Using a browser (or as you said "on the Internet") going to sites and selecting drop-down menus are all done with a SINGLE left click.

You typically only double left click when opening icons on your desktop.

Should have said with single click too!

Guess I was double clicking in frustration. Won't even work with single click. I can work with my emails and my programs with no problem but when I use the internet my mouse in not responsive with the left click - even for scrolling down, too. I can use the right click to open up some things when that option is available. I downloaded Mozilla Firefox thinking that maybe Internet Explorer was creating problems but nothing changed. It's never happened to me before.

Thanks for any help!

You mentioned batteries so ...

we will guess that your mouse is wireless. What else do you have in the near vicinity that operates on 2.4 Ghz (such as a phone) as it may be interfering.

Try a wired mouse and see if the problem resolves or repeats (we know you probably prefer the wireless but we are trouble shooting and trying to solve a problem and test results are informative).

Check the mouse applet in your Control Panel and take a look at ALL of the settings.

Name the brand and model of the mouse and we may discover that there are cures or that there is an inherent problem.

Solved it

I solved my problem. I uninstalled Internet Explorer 7 and installed FireFox as my browser and everything now works great! Thanks, anyway.................

Mouse Won't Click on Links in Internet Explorer
Jun 10, 2012 6:55PM PDT

I had the same problem. I found out what the problem was. In Internet Explorer 9, under the "View" tab, there is an option to turn on something called "panning hand". I had clicked that to see what it did and then I forgot about it. When I went to web pages later, I couldn't click on links in web pages. I searched all over for the problem and could never resolve it. I couldn't even respond here since when I tried to reply, I would get the box to make a user name. That wouldn't work either. As soon as I turned off that "panning hand" thing all was back to normal. I can't in my wildest dreams figure out why Microsoft would even place that option there when all it does is ****** things up. What do we need a panning hand for in Internet Explorer anyway?
