I'll just ask the obvious...
Did you try switching the optical mouse with another one? See if a friend can "loan" you one for the test. Maybe the button is bad and a new one will solve the problem.
Have you checked HP's site to see if there is a software update for the mouse?

I have two mice installed, one is the original PS/2 mouse and the other is a HP optical mouse (USB HID-compliant). I prefer to use the optical mouse so I do not have to keep cleaning the originals feet (ball) all the time and it is faster, The problem is that the center button (auto scroll) on the optical does not function all the time but the original does. I have checked all settings in the device manager and they say no problems-normal for both. Any help would be appreciated.
