If I read your post correctly:
- This happens with different mice on different OS'es (say: Windows and Live Linux).
- So it's not a defective mouse, nor something (driver or setting) in the OS
- So it's the hardware inside the case, the only common factor. Try a wreless mouse, a PS/2-mouse (if it's a USB-mouse no) or the other way around, or a different motherboard.

The last little while my left click has been sporadic. Maybe every 5 clicks it will randomly not click or it will double click. If I hold it down and drag to create a highlight zone, after a few seconds the highlight zone will disappear and it will restart to wherever I moved my cursor. I've tried switching the mouse buttons and then it works fine, but this doesn't resolve the fact that left click specifically is misbehaving, so when I do that the "right" click starts acting funny.
I've tested 3 different mice (all corded since I dislike wireless mice), and they all have this problem. I've tried different operating systems and the problem persists. I've tested it in a diagnostic utility partition and the problem persists. I've uninstalled and reinstalled device drivers multiple times, and I've fiddled with Root Hub power settings and registry values to no avail. I've tried running an AutoHotKey script to override the default background mouse command, and nothing has changed. I've done everything I can think of to fix it and spent a great deal of time on the googles, and it's getting a bit frustrating.
Does anyone have any idea what on Earth is wrong?
