I have a dell dimensions 4100 with 20GB Ultra ATA-100 hard drive, Pentium 3 proceessor, 866 mhz and 128ram 133 MHz SDRam of memory running on windows me. I have been using a program called soulseek to download music. After being on this program for about an hour the computer restarts on me by itself. There are times when I open another program and everything freezes on me including the mouse. I'm using Verizon DSL with MSN. I recently had a computer crash and had to reformat after downloading a windows update. At the time I think I was running out of memory. I did have a lot of music files. I finally had to reformat my computer and it has not worked the same since. Before this I never had any problems with this computer.

Thanks Bob

I took your advice and used all the links you sent me. It found some spyware etc.and got rid of them. My next step is to see if the fan is clogged. After running the scans the computer still froze on me. I don't understand #3. Did you install motherboard or such drivers? I have never touched the motherboard and when I reformatted I did install the drivers CD that is supplied by Dell. Any other suggestions?

That's it.

The drivers CD by Dell is usually the video, motherboard and other drivers. If you can't check the CPU fan for clogs, then at least remove the case cover to let it run cooler.

What they don't tell you is the fan does deposit an insulating layer on the heatsinks.

I'd write more, but you left out what machine this is (outside of Dell), the age and not much else.

Best of luck,

In reply to: That's it.

I followed you're instructions to the letter. The system is still freezing on me. Can it be a software problem like windows milleniun ? I'm running millenium on a Dell desktop 4100. The machine is now 4 years old. It has a pentium 3 processor, 128sdram memory and 20 Ghz hard drive. I used all the pestware, adware programs you suggested. After about a half hour of operating the program i'm working on are still freezing. I'm running office 2000 premium,Verizon Online DSL w/MSN as my internet provider.
PS: I did unclog the fan and cleaned it. Don't know what else to do.

While I may recognise the heat problem, you seen reticent to open the case cover. At 4 years, I can bet that the CPU FAN has either stopped, or there is too much dust/dirt for it to cool the CPU.

Here's what you wrote which supports my thoughts: "After about a half hour of operating the program i'm working on are still freezing..."

You have a little cleaning to do.

I did open the cpu cover and cleaned the fan and all areas inside. I noticed after putting the cover back on that I feel a breeze coming from the fan area. However I don't see the fan moving. Do I have to replace the fan? Or does the fan kick in when the cpu gets hot ? Please advise. You have been very helpful.
