Question

Mouse and Keyboard do not work!!!!

Oct 27, 2018 4:04PM PDT

So recently my Keyboard and mouse have stopped functioning properly. By that I mean that my keyboard will not type anything, somehow the caps lock still works, and my mouse doesn't work in terms that when i click links online it'll download the link, or when i right click I can't access the right click options because it automatically clicks out. I have tried everything. I factory reset my PC, because I thought some application caused it. It still happened after. A Common thing that I saw on the internet is enabling filter keys in keyboard settings but that didn't work. I then thought that It may be a motherboard issue or that maybe my USB hubs didn't work, so I went ahead and upgraded my outdated processor and motherboard, BUT MY MOUSE AND KEYBOARD STILL DON'T WORK. I have updated their drivers, uninstalled my keyboard and mouse and reinstalled. I have tried everything on the internet, but I still have that issue. It is really frustrating because they will randomly work and stop working. My guess now is that maybe my power supply is dying, or it isn't creating enough power for it to get to the USB ports. Does anyone have a solution on what it may be?

Clarification Request
Are these devices wifi type, or plugged direct to USB port?

If wifi and use a common shared "receiver" plugged to USB port, maybe the receiver is failing.

No

My keyboard and mouse are plugged in via USB, and I use an ethernet port.

Have you tried these on other USB ports?

other ports on the computer? Tried them on another computer to rule out keyboard and mouse causing it?

Sounds like the USB connector may be loose on the motherboard if this is USB ports in the back of a desktop.

This is a laptop, or desktop?

You can also download a Linux LIVE DVD and " burn image" of the ISO file to a DVD, then choose to boot from the DVD drive. See if the problem persist. If it does, then it's not the OS currently on drive causing it, but probably something with the hardware.

Also if desktop, a reset of the BIOS by shorting the proper pins on the motherboard may correct the situation. You can google how to do that.

Potential solution
Oct 27, 2018 8:55PM PDT

okay so when i’m in my bios the keyboard and mouse function properly. So I downloaded my keyboard and mouse drivers on my laptop and put them on a usb to transfer to my pc since my mouse semi worked.

I installed the drivers and the peripherals were still acting weird.

I launched again and went straight to the boot menu cause i wanted to see if i could wipe my ssd so i can reinstall windows but i didn’t know how so I clicked on my ssd and the computer booted itself.

I then saw if the problem persisted and my keyboard and mouse worked perfectly fine now.

i then restarted my pc to see if i would have the same issue if i just started it up regularly and they didn’t work for a bit on my login screen then i was able to properly use my mouse and keyboard.

I was then able to log in and use my peripherals just fine. so i shut off my pc just to double check to see if they worked still and my mouse and keyboard worked fine after restarting.

would you recommend wiping my ssd still and reintsalling? i just don’t wanna go and reinstall all of my things just for the problem to persists in the future.

Run this and post the link it gives you.
https://www.ccleaner.com/docs/speccy/using-speccy/publishing-a-speccy-profile-to-the-web

If you are using the front usb ports try the back ports.
If using the back try the front.

Tell the make and model of the psu.....read the label on the psu.

Try a linux live cd.
I don't keep up with all the distros so I'll guess....MINT
Put it on a usb stick and boot it up.

Try not to post in one long paragraph.
Break it up into chunks.
It makes it easier to read.
