Question

Mountain Home w/no Internet. Wireless device control

Feb 7, 2015 1:02AM PST

I have a remote house with no internet, but it has a land line. Is there an option for a land phone that has wireless, so as to control wireless devices like thermostats which are wireless?

It wasn't long ago that we would install dialup modem links to do remote control. You have a choice here to dive in and relearn the old tech or find folk that do this.

https://www.google.com/#q=dial+up+remote+pc+access+site:www.tomshardware.com are examples where we use some dial up PC to get to that location's LAN and devices that are on some IP network.

This isn't as bad as it seems as I could use some under 10 watt Netbook so I'm not burning my electrical budget. If your system allows it you can get fancy with boot on ring systems and more.

Answer
dialup modems

Most of them have phone answering capabilities. They will answer a phone after a certain number of rings and wait for either a fax or data signal. Combine that with some remote desktop software (RDP). The target computer can then be controlled as if it's your computer, except for the slow response speed between them. If the target computer is connected also to a LAN router, then through both of them you can access and control any wireless devices there.
