Motorola DCP501 does not play Region 1 DVDs

My older DVDs that are coded for Region 1 playback do not play on the Motorola DCP501. My region-free DVDs do work. I confirmed this problem with Motorola tech support this morning. Unbelievable. They took my name and number and will get back to me with a fix when it is available.

P.S. - I know there's a way to create region-free DVDs from the ones I have, but that is a big hassle. I would rather have a firmware fix from the manufacturer.
