Resolved Question

Motherboard doesn't respond to power button

May 16, 2018 5:21AM PDT

Recently my old pentium 4 machine stopped responding to the power button. I tried jumping the power button connector, and nothing. But today i turned off the psu, put a jumper wire between green and ground, and put the motherboard connector on. The i turned the psu on. To my suprise the pc started and posted fine. So any advice to get it to boot usinng the power button. Motherboard is asus p4b.

So did you replace this power button?

Or are you asking how to repair a power button?

No, but i shorted the pins on the motherboard

Shorting the motherboard power button pins did nothing. That should start the pc, right?

I misread your top post.

I read it as if you jumped it on the board.

There are cases where a low CMOS battery can cause this. Did you replace the CMOS battery with a new good one? Also what is the voltage or the new and old CMOS battery?

Figure a dollar item. I do see folk push back on this advice. But hey, a motherboard is so much more.

I have no idea what i did, but suddenly it just booted with the power button again. I think the contacts were corroded. Or the pc just had a bad day.

you may have to always use

switch on back of PSU if shorting the start pins on the motherboard won't do it. If the motherboard power on isn't working, look for other problems to crop up later.
