more wireless router problems

Jul 30, 2007 5:02AM PDT

I have two computers that I am using a wireless router to use the Internet on the both computer. I have tried two different USB type receivers on the second computer. After a few hours of use we end up having to restart the computer because it loses its connection with the Internet. Then some times when we restart the computer it can't find the USB receiver. My question is will this problem go away if I installed a PCI card or should I just run a ethernet cable to the second computer? I don't want to spend $50 on a PCI card if it isn't going to work. I really don't want to run the cable through the house, but I am getting frustrated with this not work.

of this type occur when the signal strength isn't enough to go through walls and around people. Cordless phones, cell phones, microwaves also contribute to this. Try repositioning the router. It would help if we knew more about the equipment you are using, i.e. the info asked for in the red print above. Are you trying for wireless a,b or g or n? What is the USB connected to? The computer, powered hub, unpowered hub? What is the distance you are trying to achieve? These are all critical factors in determining what is best. Let us know.

router information

I am using a Linksys model WRT54G wireless router on the main computer and a TRENDnet TEW-429UB - 54Mbps 802.11g Wireless USB 2.0 Adapter on the other computer. It is having to transmit through a wall into the next room. I am guessing that it is having to transmit about 10 to 15 feet. The USB adapter is being plugged right into a USB port right on the back of the computer. Both computers are running Windows XP. I am not sure what else I can tell you. Hopefully this will help.

Linksys and...

Trendnet do not always mix even though they say it will (that's how they sell more product). I have no personal experience with this product but trying a different USB adapter would be in order here.. if you have one available. I have Linksys and it works well. One thing to try would be to download the latest software drivers and reinstall. Uninstall the old one first, including the device in the device manager. Let us know.
