About the read only. As we read http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=291288 it is clear that the read-only open is still in there, but not a menu item. Just like in Excel 97, you can edit the File Open menu to offer a read-only option. It's slightly advanced and your IT staff should be able to help you write the needed code and click the mouse proper.
I will not defend MS over removing such items, but they do give a way to put such back in.

Just found 2 more missing features since my upgrade.
In Excel 97, from the File/Open window, you could right click a file name, and select open read only from the drop down menu.
This option is missing from Excel 2002, so how do you open a file read-only, when you know some one else needs to load it not read only a few minutes after you?
Secondly, consider when you have an open spreadsheet, that links to several other sheets, some of which are open, and some not.
in Excel 97, if you open the Edit/Links... window, linked source files that were already open showed the name only, the others showed the full path as well.
You could see at a glance the files that weren't open, select them, and either click open source or change source.
In Excel 2002 there is no difference, so you can't see which files you still need to open.
Does anyone know a way around these 2 points?
