Google Calender is free and you don't even have to download it, because it's web-based.

The poor man's calendar is a spreadsheet or word processing document. Those are free to make with OpenOffice.

If the above aren't satisfactory, you might consider to disclose your hidden requirements.

What I want to do is replace the desk (paper) calendar.

I do not want to be ONLINE with it.

I will be putting stuff like "bill due date" and birthdays and appointments.

What's wrong with Outlook? I don't use it for email but since it's part of Office, I use it for the calendar, contacts and the to-do list.
