I had this same issue with an Acer monitor and Windows 7. I actually had two monitors, originally both hooked with their normal cables. Using "2" as an extension of "1", both were properly set at the same resolution. But adding the extender to "2", Windows then lost track of what monitor it was, and did not allow as high a resolution. I fiddled for about an hour, trying to change the driver, etc., nothing worked, as Windows essentially did not allow me to change the settings for "2".
I'm trying to hook up an HP 2310 monitor (native resolution 1900x1080) to a Dell Inspiron laptop running Windows XP Pro, using a Belkin 10' VGA extension cable.
When I first hooked it up, it worked at the native resolution, so I know this is possible.
Then I ran some Windows updates, checked for newer drivers (but apparently those were already up-to-date). Now, the highest resolution available with the extension cable is 1024x768.
Here is the current state of affairs:
Without extension cable
(single VGA cable between monitor and computer)
- Recognizes attached monitor as HP 2310m
- Automatically at 1900x1080
With extension cable
(2 VGA cables between monitor and computer, as extension cable will not attach to monitor)
- Attached monitor labeled as ?Default Monitor?
- Automatically at 1024x768
- Sometimes, 1024x768 and 800x600 are the only available resolutions
- Other times, all resolutions are ?available? in the slider, but trying to select any of them leads to the following error messages:
o "The display Control Panel is unable to change the display settings. You may not have appropriate administrative rights to change these settings." [*Note: I am the admin, and the only user. Also, at other times I am able to change resolution without issue.]
o "The display settings being saved are invalid, please try a different combination of display settings."
Things I have tried (that haven?t worked)
- Lots and lots of rebooting, often coupled with one of the following methods
- Automatically installing monitor drivers by running the CD that came with the monitor
- Forcibly installing monitor drivers by selecting the location on the CD with the correct driver
- Uninstalling all monitor and adapter drivers, rebooting, and reinstalling default drivers
- Selecting ?List all modes? from display settings
- Clearing checkbox for ?Hide modes that this monitor cannot display?
- Hooking it up to a newer HP laptop running Windows 7 (still only 1024x76![]()
I would appreciate any suggestions to fix this!
Plan B is to find some other way of having the laptop sit 10' away from the monitor, so I am also interested in what my other options would be. The laptop only has VGA and s-video ports, although the monitor has VGA, s-video, DVI, and HDMI.
