Monitor power button turns yellow New Computer w/Windows 7

Oct 29, 2009 9:55PM PDT

I just bought a new computer- less than a week out of the box. It has worked fine until now, but this morning my husband told me he had been using a flash drive to move some files onto the new computer. He left for awhile and the then came back to find the monitor screen had gone haywire- it was full of what I can best describe as the 'snow' you might see on an old TV, but it was more like green plaid snow. I turned the computer off, waited a moment then turned it back on. The monitor did not turn on and reboot with the system, so I turned it on manually. First the power button when to green, but it almost immediately went to yellow with the screen black. I cannot get it out of what I understand is power save mode as it continually goes back to yellow. When I press any of the screen keys on the monitor I see a message. "1. Analog input in power save mode. Press computer power button or any key on keyboard or move mouse."
Trying any of this does not change a thing.

Can anyone tell me what is wrong? The computer is HP Pavilion Slimline s5220f running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.

After checking the connection I'd start trying another monitor (you might still have your old one).

- If that helps, get a free repair (or exchange) for the monitor from your warranty.
- If that doesn't help, get a free repair (or exchange) for your machine from your warranty.

Thanks, I did forget to mention that the monitor is not new, though everything else is. The monitor is a Dell flat screen that I guess is 2-3 years old.

The monitor could be the problem and we are going to try another one later today. However, I just noticed that the VOIP phone we have working from this computer (majic jack) is not working. So I guess it is possible the PC is actually on Power Save mode, too. I don't know how to tell that since I can't view anything on the screen.

Just checking.

Did you try setting the resolution and refresh to something well within that monitor's capability?

That's a very good possibility, indeed. With PC on power save it's quite conceivable it will not send a signal to the monitor. So the monitor says, that it doesn't receive a signal.

The usual way to get a PC up and running from power save again is moving the mouse or pressing the space bar. It could also be set to hibernate. A possible way to get it out of that is the power button.
If everything fails: read the manual.
If even that fails: disconnect from the main. Wait half a minute. Connect again and turn it on.

This sounds like it could also be an issue with the video card. Try a monitor known to be working or try your monitor on another computer if you can.
