Question

Monitor or Cable?

Jan 16, 2013 10:20PM PST

My eMachines monitor will not turn on; just a blank, black screen. It APPEARS no power is getting to it. How can I discern whether it is the monitor or the cable?

Monitor

Try another monitor on the system or another system with the monitor. It is pretty rare to have a cable fail. My guess would be the monitor but it could also be an internal video issue, that is another possibility. First things first monitor swap easiest thing to try.

Monitor or cable II

The cable is fine; monitor appears out, nothing lights up when cable is plugged in; all other components of the system get power.

Quite frankly we know little about this monitor. Just what model# is it. You can simply unplug it from the PC and power-ON and check status. Most newer monitors will give a "signal status" display of sorts, if nothing appears then pretty much some error with monitor. Are there any LEDs showing power status?

As another poster offered, swap this to a working PC and check status then. If the monitor seems to be failing then consider the repair cost, probably better to replace than repair, IMO.
