Monitor Keeps Blacking Out!

by tenicis / October 30, 2004 2:02 PM PDT

Thanks in advance:

Before the new Windows XP Service Pack 2 update, my monitor would just go black randomly. Then, I have to press the "power" button on my monitor to turn it off, and press the "power" button again to turn it back on, and it would work fine until it decides randomly to go black again.

Recently, I downloaded the new SP2 update and now my screen goes black probably 10-15 times a day! The computer is still on, I just can't see anything. Even before the update, this would happen, but only about once a month. Anyone know how to solve this problem?

This does not help you but I would restore the computer to a date before you installed SP2. I personnally don't like updates of anykind and don't need to be told to do something I'm not sure of.

Please provide further details about your system configuration. How do you know the system is still on? Do you get a error message upon forcing the reboot about not being shut down properly? Do you hear anything? Does Ctrl-Alt-Del work to restart your PC?

If I had to take stab in the dark I would say that either your graphics card is not big enough for Windows XP or that you have a faulty grapics card or onboard graphics or that you have not allocated enough memory in your BIOS to your graphics. (ie I had an old 8MB PCI Card in a PC to troubleshoot a possibly faulty on-board graphics and whilst the system boots up and I can hear the system activity etc... I have no picture after the initial startup screen. Putting a HDD with DOS in works fine with this old and small card)

Please provide some more details so that others are better equip to help you.

Since your problem may very well be that the monitor is going bad, have you tried simply swapping in another monitor temporarily? If a different monitor fixes the issue, you'll know where the problem lies and can replace your bad monitor.

Have you tried updating your video card's driver?

Hope this helps.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
