Bless it and now bury it. That's about as good as it gets with a 9yr. old monitor, you got your money's worth. It should only get worse and fail entirely. It either has a bad HV xformer or leaky one/its int. cable, possibility CRT tube. Though, I would at least open it up and air clean it out of dust build-up BUT, inspect componets beforehand of any obvious damage. Don't do any of this if not capable or unsure, there is HV present even when turned off. I suspect the Sony is a CRT type monitor, it maybe time to get a new one, maybe an LCD model of your likening. The electronic deals can be checked online, but now and into Xmas/New Year is the best time for such.

I have a 9 year old Sony Trinitron. Bless its heart its been good but the last few months its been giving me wavy lines whenever I would power it back on or boot the computer up. At first it was only a half of an inch or so, but now its at least an inch. After 30-40 seconds it stops and I get use of the full screen. I tried taking a screenshot of this but the wavy lines did not appear on the screenshot--not sure if that is good or not.
I just reinstalled the driver and that didn't work. Is there something that can be done?
Alternately, is this a sign of a very imminent demise? With Circuit City's bad luck I might be able to get a real steal in the coming Christmas season. If this is a sign that it can go at any time, I'd rather buy now than have to buy a new monitor at full price during the year some months from now.
