Monitor fails to shutdown after computer shutdown

by cnetelmore / July 26, 2009 4:15 PM PDT

Used to have a Dell Dimension computer (Win XP w/SP 1 & 2) and when I shut it down, the monitor would also auto shutdown, and the pilot light on the monitor would change from green to yellow. This worked with an original Hyundai CRT monitor and more recently a Dell SE198WFP monitor. I've now switched to a non-Dell computer. The SE198 monitor no longer shuts down when the computer is shut down. Is there any driver update or fix that would restore the monitor auto shutdown after computer shutdown?

There was no driver or such available so I changed the video card in the new machine. The monitor now shuts down.

You should not have had to do that. Vista default Shutdown in not shutdown at all. It's Sleep. The monitor has a separate power source and does not really shutdown if the light is yellow. If any light is on, the monitor is on (green) or in standby. Go to Power Settings and change the on screen shutoff button to Shutdown if you would rather not have the computer Standby when you shut it off.

How does Vista settings help when the power is off? That is, the issue I fixed was when the AC was removed from the desktop but not the display.
