Modern Warfare 2 Lag

Mar 14, 2010 12:18AM PST

Hello,

So, I was playing Modern Warfare 2 on my Xbox 360, and suddenly, I am lagging like crazy. I am using the grey Wireless Adapter and have a Motorola SBV5222 Modem and a Netgear WGR614v9 router. Please help!

No Can Do
Mar 14, 2010 1:49AM PST

No can do, because there are simply too many possible reasons for lag, many of which involve systems beyond your ability to control.

I can say, however, that wireless for online gaming is about the worst possible thing you can do.

Nothing?!?!?

I can't do anything about it?!?!?!

Maybe, Maybe Not

Maybe, maybe not. It all depends on what specifically is causing the lag. If it's not a crap wireless connection or an issue with your Internet connection, then there is nothing you can do about it.

Can I...?

Can I buy another modem and hook it up to my xbox, and then hook the modem up to the internet? Would that make the signal better?

Probably not

Probably not, but it's impossible to say. Without knowing exactly what the problem is, or at least eliminating a few possibilities, there just isn't any way of telling. It's a hard concept for people without much/any networking experience to grasp, but it's the truth none the less.

You can start by hardwiring your 360 to your router to eliminate some issue with wireless interference. Also make sure that there are no file sharing programs running on any other computer connected to the router, and just reboot the router for good measure. If none of those has any effect, it's on the other end, and there's nothing you can do.

But I...

But I also currently have a modem AND a router...Does that mean anything?

You should try the HARD WIRED connection first.

Modem or Router?

Hardwire it to my modem or router?

Both

Both. Start with the router, if that doesn't do anything, try the modem. If still no change, then you're basically screwed.

try hard wiring

As another person stated, try using a good network cable(Cat 6). Don't buy one any longer than you need. I have a 25ft. Belkin Cat 6 running between the router and the Xbox. The only time I ever experience lag is when it's server related. I can say this because I used to have a wireless connection. Wired is better and you can tell the difference when you download something or are playing online. Good Luck
