modem problem

by rositam / February 16, 2004 7:04 AM PST

I have reformatted my computer - some luck, some knowledge - I run a Pentium III 866/133 Windows ME. I don't have a recovery disk with the computer (never given)and no disk or floppy for the modem driver (never given) I have a SmartLink 56 56UST V.90 USB Modem. Under Device Manager , it shows it there and that the COM ports 1 and 2 are functional. I installed Winfax Pro 10.0 - when it tries to configure the modem - it tells me it is busy. So I tried to update the drivers from the SmartLink internet site - downloaded to a driver file. Went to Modems - updated the file from this specific location. Went to Winfax - same problem. Tried to send a fax - the message is "TAPI modem is not accessible. Modem may be in use". Don't know what to do now? Any ideas? Thanks in advance

Unfortunately no - I've done all the things they ask on the symantec sheets - have downloaded drivers - still no luck. I'm in touch with SmartLink asking them to send me a driver?? Don't know if that's the answer

Did you try a) uninstalling all the modem drivers, then restart the pc, open control panel, click on add new hardware, let windows find it again, then install the required drivers. b) remove/ uninstall all modem drivers, turn off the pc and open the case and remove the modem card ( one screw holds it in place ). Turn on the pc and let it full boot to windows, turn back off, reinstall the modem, turn pc back on, if windows doesn't detect the new hardware goto control panel and launch "add new hardware", it should find it, then load the drivers. Hope this helps, it worked for me !

I have the same problem. Error,"Tapi modem is not accessible. Modem may be in use." I followed procedure posted to untinstall, boot, remove modem, etc., it did not work. Does Winfax or M/soft have an update to fix. Winfax Pro worked fine for about 6 mos. then would answer some fax calls and not others. Very weird. Can anyone help. Gratefulshadow.

I'm not that familiar with Winfax Pro but I'm guesing Winfax is only looking for a modem on one of the COMM ports 1, 2, 3, or 4. Read through the Winfax install documentation or go to their website and see what exceptions have to be made for plug and play modems such as yours to work with Winfax.
If you should ever decide to upgrade to Windows XP you'll find that problems such as this rarely occur as XP is much better at handling hardware.
