modem not workin with linux in vmware, why?

after installin suselinux on my vmware runnin on vista, i tried connectin my modem to the linux but it refused to work with it. I went back to vmware and installed the modem through the usb option tab. Afterwards,i noticed that i was seein the modem name and memory card, i could also access the content of the card but the modem still didnt work.
wat exactly is the problem and how can i resolve it?
It is an huwei usb modem.

Tell exact model. you can find it with:
lsusb
command when modem is connected.

Cheap made in china modems are problematic generally. They even do not have driver department sometimes.

(NT) the model is E1550(huawei) and this has a driver compartment
