modem not going to work??

Feb 11, 2009 10:49AM PST

I just got a letter from my cable company telling me that as of March 1 ,2009 my modem will no longer work. Are they right?? I have a Surfboard SB3100 they said my modem must be at least a DOCSIS 2.0 or higher, and they offer one for $59.99. Is that a rip off or what? How can I get around this? Problem is that modem is doing everything, my wireless is off that and so is my telephone. Does this really mean I will be disconnected? You guys have always helped me in the past and I have gotten some great advice here, I am hoping someone can answer this for me. I hope I have this posted in the right place

So you could wait and see.

What model are they providing?

$60 might be a good price. I think basically the difference between 1.1 and 2.0 is bandwidth capability. So the sb3100 will still work (that my guess). Are you by any chance changing services requirement?

I called the cable company this morning they said its motorola SC5101/ or SB5120, I asked him if mine would work the SB3100, he answered it might but we will not be able to update it and your computer will be very very slow. He said you can also go to Best Buy or Walmart to get one. Guess I am going to have to buy one, I told him my computer is like 6 years old and not too quick. He was telling me a new modem would make it faster hmmmmmmmmmmm..
