Question

Modem noise on phone

Apr 19, 2012 7:18AM PDT

When using the telephone, there is a hissing background noise & sometimes a squeal & beeps. The noise goes away when the modem is unplugged from the phone jack.
All phones have filters on them. The modem is plugged into a phone jack that is direct wired to the NID.
This noise started a few months ago after some windstorms.

Technical info:
Westell G90-610015-20 ADSL+ MODEM (3 yrs old & provided by Verizon. I think I own it, not leased. Plugged directly into the electric outlet & phone jack.)
Belkin F7D1301 v1 Basic Wireless Router (2 yrs old)
HP Photosmart Premium C309g-m (3 yrs old)
HP Pavilion BK290AA-ABA s5304y (3 yrs old)
HP G62 Notebook PC (1 yr old)
Verizon DSL

What should be done to get rid of the noise? Thanks.

Answer
Time to call Verizon and complain about it.

Do they provide your phoneline also? Or are they just the ISP and is the line operated by another company? Then most likely they'll say it's that company.

I'm afraid that some tech will have to come with another modem to see if it's the modem that needs to be replaced or the line that needs to be repaired.

Call your provider. It's nothing you can fix.

Hissing sounds like a DSL modem, squeals and beeps sounds like a fax, is your printer a fax as well or do you have an old dial up modem plugged in some how?

Verizon is the ISP and the dial tone & phone line provider.

I contacted Verizon service department & they determined the problem is the modem. They will send a new modem.

Hopefully it will last longer than the first. I wonder why it failed in the first place? Plenty of air circulation & not near a heat source.
