Modem - extra initialization commands

Mar 15, 2004 7:12PM PST

I have been told that I can tweak (speedup) my modem my adding a string into this section of modem properties (under advanced). I have an Actiontec Diamond Voice(old)560000bps Fax/Data Modem with a pentium 111 900 using windows xp. Can anyone tell me what I put in there. Also would buying a new modem speed up my connection. Current connection is at 57.6 kps. Unfortuneately not in broadband area but have been thinking of ISDN. Any comments or help would be greatly appreciated.
Great site too. Loved the support for that lady who lost her dog. Nice one guys. Happy

If your current connection is at 57.6 kps which is highly improbable since the FCC limits it to 53 kps your doing better than anyone I know with a dialup connection/modem. You could check out the links below if you want to try some strings but I doubt they would give you any faster connection than you're getting now.

Cheers Mate,
Im in Australia if that means anything as far as connection rate is concerned. Checked out those sites, no luck, but the sites are excellent (will keep in favourites).Would you have any information regarding ISDN for me. Have tried the telecommunications people but they are all a bit vague. Just want the laymans rundown.
Thanks again.Happy

A 56K modem will never get 56K, see my site http://www.wayne.hardy.com/ for the reasons.

ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) is nice, but it can be expensive. The maximum speed will be 128 Kb/s if you get the 2B+D connection. Two B-channels at 64 Kb/s, plus the D-channel for signaling.

Hello,

First, the 57,600 you see is a reporting of the COM port's BAUD rate--NOT what the modem is sending and receiving at.

Your modem's manual should have the proper init commands (actual commands will vary depending on chipset). If you don't have the manual try seeing if you can download it from ActionTec's site http://www.actiontec.com/support/archive.html You will have to locate the correct modem. (I am pretty sure it is this one but check to be sure - http://www.actiontec.com/support/modems/dlad.html )

Here is one place that lists two init strings to try http://www.actiontec.com/support/modems/dlad.html

Here is a place that lists a firmware update for it (as well as Win 2K and XP drivers) http://www.mitsubishi-electric.com.au/downloads/modems/EX560LK.htm
