Modem doesn't working after upgrading to Winxp

Mar 23, 2005 1:56AM PST

This is a strange one. I have 2 identical computers. Same everything except one I upgraded years ago to WinXP and the other was on WinME. I just upgraded the WinME and now I can't connect to the internet. The other computer connects fine, same modem, username, jack. This one comes back with an 629 error. I'm stumped. I've upgraded the driver to the latest driver. I've checked all the settings that I can find and they are the same as the one that can connect.
Any thoughts?

Not unusual. Here's why.
Mar 23, 2005 1:59AM PST

Microsoft doesn't write drivers so its up to the person who installs this OS to find and install such drivers. Sometimes the new driver fails or the upgrader didn't delete the DIAL UP CONNECTIOD and create a new one.

There is no do-this cure.

How I fix that issue.

If drivers are not available from Gateway then I disable the onboard sound and install a nice Creative Labs PCI SB16 card.

"OTHER DRIVERS" such as motherboard drivers may be required.

Modems and Win XP
Mar 24, 2005 4:33PM PST

When re-installing or upgrading to WinXp - If the modem is left fitted, usually Win XP won't recognize it. The trick is to remove the modem and replace it in a DIFFERENT PCI slot. Re-boot and Windows will pick it up and request the drivers. Put the driver disk into CD Rom and tell it to install automatically. Bingo! Now delete and re-create dial-up.
Hope this helps.

Dean has the answer

The advice above by Dean , based on my expierence, is about the best option for your situation. Be sure to save your file (a dot DUN file) that has all of your current dialup info in case it gets overwritten..

If you don't have a spare slot to move it to, often just removing it...then rebooting...then shutdown and put it back in the same slot, and robooting will fix the problem. However, changing slots is the stronger option.

If none of that works...static discharge may have gotten your modem..just save yourself some time and buy an updated modem and install it. This is assuming that you have checked the phone line on the other computer, and hooked a phone up to it to assure that it is working. Static on the line, or a slightly damaged line can prevent a connect.

Modem
Mar 25, 2005 5:10AM PST

Hmmm, I'd check the Bios settings first.
Make sure the machine is setup for plug and play and Acpi S1, then if there is a choice to reset the pnp settings in the bios, enable that ( this is a one time shot and will be reset to no after the reset). See if the machine detects the hardware, let it figure out it's own drivers first, If it doesn't have any, use the latest drivers you own, and not for an OS lower than Win 2k!!!!! If this still fails, shutdown, unplug the power and remove the modem, plug in the power and reboot, click the system icon in Control panel, select the first Icon in Hardware (your computer) and select view in the menu and look for hidden devices that look like they are your modem parts (make sure!!!) delete them. Shutdown and unplug the system. Since the modem is out of the box, have a good look at it and find make and model (not necessarily based on the installed modem chip!!) Jot this down and use the other working computer to find the driver on the net, but beware win2k and up! Reinstall the modem, plug in and power up, it should detect the modem, and request a driver, so now the downloaded driver comes in handy, preferably on a USB stick or disk, now you tell windows where to look and install the driver....and now it should work!

Modem doesn't working after upgrading to Winxp
Mar 24, 2005 9:49PM PST

I had the same issue on a clients machine after I upgraded from Windows Me to Xp.. the modem showed and tested fine, but could not connect to the isp.

Solution? Windows Xp lets you roll back the driver.. I would try that step first.

Right mouse click on my computer, then click on properties, then click on the hardware tab, then device manager, head to the modem area, expand that, right click on your modem and click on properties, click on the driver tab and then click on the rollback driver.

Hope that helps

Modem Problem?! Try this!
Mar 27, 2005 9:24AM PST

ok first of all you need to make sure that your drivers are updated; also certain modems require updates after Windows XP SP2! once you have done that trying following http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314455 this artice... i'm sure this would fix the problem.

The solution is easy. Switch to broadband.

The solution is easy. Switch to broadband.
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

That would be nice if it was available everywhere AND its NOT! So, don't be so glib and suggest everyone switch to broadband as not everyone has it and/or can afford the cost regardless of its the virtues. Sad -----Willy
