modem dial up noise

Oct 24, 2004 4:36AM PDT

How do I turn off the modem dial up sound? I know there are two adjustments in this thing, but I can only find the modem volume control - and that doesn't mute the modem. I used to know where it was.

On this machine if I go to cont pnl/modem I find a vol slider that dose not seem to have any effect on this modem.

If I go to mycomp/dialup networking there I find a vol slider that does control the vol for this modem.

If neither one of those work I seem to recall an extra setting you could add to the init string to shut off the noisy beast.

If you need it post back and I'll go search.

Re: AT command strings

If you want to use the AT command strings, here is some help:

Speaker On/Off
M0 Speaker always off
M1 Speaker on until carrier detected
M2 Speaker always on
M3 Speaker on during answering only

Speaker Volume
L0 Speaker volume zero
L1 Speaker volume low
L2 Speaker volume medium
L3 Speaker volume high

Good luck.

I found it.
Start/all programs/accessories/communications/network connections/ right click the Dial-up icon/properties/general/configure/uncheck the box ?enable modem speaker?. Phew! ? no wonder I couldn?t find it.
I realized the shortcut afterwards: start/connect to/show all connections/etc? 7 steps, instead of 10. Thanks.

Many people prefer to have that sound turned off. I prefer to hear it. There are rare occasions when you can hear that you aren't going to get a good connection. You don't want to be in the middle of something and get cut off. It happens enough anyway.

If you hear that the modem is taking too long, hit the cancel, and retry. You will get a higher connection speed than going with the "long dial".

'Just my personal preferance. Happy

There's another reason

for keeping the modem dial-up sound.

Many people suffer from dialler programs being installed without them knowing. They will be surfing the internet and without them knowing their dial up network will be disconnected and re-connected to a premium rate or international phone number.

At least with the modem sound on, you can hear if suddenly the modem attempts to redial and re-connect you to the internet.

OK first go to your dial up properties and there should be a dial-up or connection settings there and turn off modem speaker. then you should be able to connect with out the annoying humming and beeping sounds.

Go to the control panel then network connections. There you should find your dialup connection listed. Right click on it then left click on properties. On the general tab is the name of your modem. Click on configure then uncheck the box for enable modem sound. That will quiet your connection and stop the noise.

permanently disable the sound by taking apart of the modem and yank out whatever that makes sound. if it's an external modem that is.
