Modem/Broadband Issues (Ready light not staying lit)

Jul 3, 2009 5:17AM PDT

Any ideas would be appreciated, I can't figure this out.

copy & pasted from another site I'm trying to get help at:

1st post-

For the past few days I've been having problems with my suddenlink modem. Whenever the modem is reset the Ready light flashes a few times, then goes blank. Or doesn't flash at all, and just is blank. I used a different power cord and that didn't solve the problem. Though whenever I hook up an alternative modem it connects without any problems. Though it's not a Suddenlink modem so it only will take me to the activation page.
I'm pretty sure my modem is just on its last leg and is about to die but I'd like to check on a forum before I go out and have to buy another 55$ modem.

Update:
Ok, I went ahead and rented another Suddenlink modem. (Not going to buy one yet till I know it's actually a modem problem.)

Well the same thing is happening with this modem. I'll describe what happened.

I got the new modem, plugged it in. Everything was working fine, no problems w/ connection or anything. Then after around 7-8 hours being plugged in the connection started getting horribly slow, another 15-25 minutes passed, connection was nil. The ready light after a little while started blinking (fast), then it went off. The other lights were fine and acting normally. Whatever the problem is, it seems to only affect the ready light.

I unplugged the modem, waited, plugged it back in. The ready light will either not light up whatsoever or Blink on and off, then go off. Or will blink slower, then go off.

Then I will unplug the modem, and the next morning I plug it in, it works fine and the process starts all over again. I plug it in around 1-2pm and it will be trying to go out around 9-10ish.

(btw I got a whole new power cord when I got the new modem.)

Also, something strange... whenever the modem speed was first getting extremely slow, to the point where I couldn't view pages. I switched from Ethernet to USB and the speed was normal. Then about 30minutes - 1hr later, the ready light started blinking then turned off.

Summary
- Ready light turns off & sometimes blinks rapidly before hand
- Most recent time the connection speed got slow before hand / then stopped all together
- Same thing is occurring with an entirely new modem & new power cord. (I also switched outlets.)

I'm trying as best I can to confine the source of the problem. When I switched to USB, that is not plugged into the network card, so if the problem is a faulty NIC it shouldn't be causing problems still should it? (though it is, so I'm assuming it isn't the card.)

Any ideas?

Sounds like you might have a very bad connection.

You have DSL? It could very likely be your ISP problem.

cable

No I have cable through Suddenlink.

I guess I'm going to email Suddenlink Help and see what can be found out. I already was suppose to be getting help on a different forum from a Suddenlink employee but they haven't messaged me back yet.

I'm not positive but I think it seems to be messing up in certain time periods. Like around 11-12:30, and yesterday it messed up at around 11:45, came back on about an hour later.

The ready light either just blinks on and off, blinks faster/goes off after 10-15 seconds, or just doesn't light up at all. The rest of the time it works fine, except it seems like it's maybe going a bit slower than it was before the problems started.

Anyone know any commands I can run to ping the modem & what not so I can make sure the problem isn't from the modem to the computer?
Could a NIC problem make it act like this?
