mkv files not playing

by Zoostation123 / March 26, 2011 2:49 PM PDT

I recently bought Samsung series 7 3D LED TV (UA46C7000WF). When I try to play mkv files through external usb hard drive, it doesn't play. Please help. Also, can someone tell me how to play external subtitles?

Zoostation123,

Have you check to make sure that the video codec, the audio codec and the resolution are all supported as listed in the manual?

Often times, if these files haven't been ripped or encoded correctly, they may not work. Reencoding the files may be necessary for them to play on different devices.

Dear HDTech,

Thanks for responding. But when I plug in my external usb drive, none of the mkv files even show in the list. It's not just 1 or 2 files, all mkv files don't show.

Zoostation123,

Did you rip or encode the files into the supported codecs as listed in the manual?

Dear HDTech,

I haven't done that. Would you be kind enough to tell me how to do it?

Zoostation123,

You'll need a program like Handbrake, and then match them up with the video codec, audio codec, resolution and subtitle (if applicable - not everyone uses subtitles) as outlined in the manual.

There are forums and threads for that outside of the Samsung forum. I can't assist in specific cases for individual titles, but maybe one of the mods or other forum members can jump in.

Let me sum it up for everyone. Encode with what settings you find to work. You will lose nothing but your time trying to prove that your encoding "should work."

I've posted too much on this subject and I agree it should be easier but for now everyone gets to learn that MKV and AVI mean NOTHING since those are "containers." After that we get to learn far too much and try again and again till we find what works.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
