"mix-matching" adapters to connect PS3 to older monitor...

Sep 14, 2009 9:42AM PDT

Basically I have a computer monitor with a VGA connector and was wondering if I could connect it to my PS3 by using the DVI-to-VGA adapter already on the monitor plug and connecting a HDMI-to-DVI connector to that. So basically it will go in this order...

PS3 40GB (http://reviews.cnet.com/consoles/sony-playstation-3-40gb/4507-10109_7-32733577.html?tag=mncol;rnav)
to
HDMI-to-DVI adapter (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812226016&cm_re=hdmi_male_to_dvi_female-_-12-226-016-_-Product)
to
DVI-to-VGA adapter (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814999020&cm_re=DVI_to_VGA-_-14-999-020-_-Product)
and finally
eMachines eView 17f monitor (http://reviews.cnet.com/crt-monitors/emachines-eview-17f3-display/1707-3175_7-31278691.html)

So basically my question is can the two adapters be used together or am I just out of luck because all my monitors and TVs are too old? And if any of you are wondering why I want to plug my PS3 into a computer monitor it's because I'm wanting to try Yellow Dog Linux on there but it looks terrible on my SD-TV.

I read the reviews...

It looks like most (if not all) people had a problem with that adapter. So I don't know if that would be a good choice for me. After looking at that page and other pages linked to it I read more about people trying to do what I wanted to do and found out it isn't possible because the PS3 outputs in digital and my monitor uses analog. So I'll need some type of converter which so far seems to be around $50 just for a cheap-good. I can't really afford anything over $20 right now with how money problems are going, my parents used to have the whole "use credit cards and it'll all go away" idea stuck in their head and now we're all paying the consequences, but I won't get too far into my parents poor money handling ideas. Silly Thanks for the link though, never knew they made PS3-to-VGA adapters.

Sorry.

I read the reviews and no one had "problems." They just didn't like how you had to hook up the TV to setup and other things. The lesson here is very clear. Let me state it clearly. You want a monitor with HDMI connections or if this cable is cheap enough (it is!) then you live with its annoyances.

Well I read a few problems. :/

"Image appears a little washed out"
"you will be rescaling the image manually...often..."
"Even after adjusting you are sometimes forced to let parts of the screen be cut off."
"it's a little on the darkside with my ps3"
"When i use it for PS3 i get blinking ever 30 mins or so"
"The image is VERY washed out and I followed the very long directions just like they were intended."
"Image is a little gray, washed, it reduces contrast ratio."
"Rapid dark/light changes, like explosions, will disable it for like one second."

And theirs a bunch more... But I wasn't going to be an *** and post them all. I may not have the money for high quality, but their is no point in buying cheap if it doesn't even work properly. Guess I'm stuck waiting for Christmas, maybe by then LED screens will drop in cost (doubtful). Either way as I said, thanks for posting the link because I never would of thought of searching for PS3-to-VGA adapters.

And let me be clear here.
