Re: Mitsubishi DLP vs. Samsung DLP

Here's a post I saw about Mitsubishi:

Samsung:
http://www.pcworld.com/digitalworld/article/0,aid,118386,00.asp

Mits 62525:
I just returned a Mits DLP 62525 due to (1) fan noise. Fan never turns off, even when TV is turned off, making it not energy star compliant also. Called Mits and" YES" fan is "always on". (2) anti-glare screen on/off TV is not helpful in the amount of glare produced from this TV, and (3) Contrast must be set to maximum for best overall picture. Other 62525 owners may have different opinions, which is fine, but these are mine. The ultimate judge is the "viewer".

Feel free to pick my brain...

DLP 62525 Glare/Noise
Jan 13, 2005 11:48AM PST

I've been told that the Model 62725 has an anti-glare screen. Did you look that model. Regarding the fan noise, was it really that loud, was that the primary reason for returing the 62525.

Just a little insider info on these tv's. Ultimately it will depend on the person on which tv he/she will purchase, money aside. If you want the best that TI has to offer then go with the Mits DLP. They have 3 lines, the entry level (525), Medallion (725), and the ultimate Diamond series (825). Mits has the best chipset currently available from TI. ( HD2+ .80)No matter which Mits dlp you buy they all have the same chip, light engine and basic features. Also, the Color wheel is a 7 segment versus the 6 segment that you get with anything else. This will give you better contrast, black level and overall pic quality. As far as a fan, they ALL have them! If you can hear the fan on any dlp you more than likely got a bad one. (it happens) Besides the best overall picture quality, the Mits is LOADED!! One post talked about connections on the Samsung 5085?? It is just a monitor! All Mits dlp's have cablecard, 3 firewire, 3 component vid, 2 av/svid, pc, rs232, memory card slots...you name it it has it! As far as glare, Mits put a shield on this thing for 1 reason, to PROTECT the screen. You may not know, there are only 2 companies that make all the screens for all the 800 and some odd DLP,LCOS,LCD-RPG tv's. If you damage it you are going to be sorry. Here is the beauty of it, if you don't want to pay extra for the anti glare on the 725 or 825 then take the shield off and buy the 49 dollar trim kit available. NO GLARE! Folks, I do this for a living, and I am pretty open minded on electronics, but the Mits dlp's are the finest on the market, best pic, best selection of features, best overall build, not to mention it is the only tv that can have the software upgraded on it in a snap. Try this with your sales counselor, go to a place that has all 3 tv's put in StarWars, Underworld, or your favorite scifi movie, tell me which one looks best with deep, true blacks, great color accuracy and such...also, remember, when you buy any tv, when it comes out of the box they ,typically don't have the correct settings...ask your professional for some help on color settings. As far as the RCA all I can say is DAMN! It is bad when even the TI rep won't recommend it!
Hope this helped.

Mitsubishi DLP vs. Samsung DLP

Thanks for your quick response. Years ago I owned a Mit. Dimond Vision CRT TV that worked great for over 10 years, so I have confidence in the company.

I've heard the good, the bad, and the ugly about Samsung, I guess there's so much in the BB's because they've been selling DLP the longest.

Any other recommendations?

Mitsubishi DLP vs. Samsung DLP
Jan 14, 2005 12:47AM PST

Actually, Mits has been doing dlp longer than just about anyone. 5 years ago they had a 65" 3-chip dlp (no color wheel) it was great and very expensive (18k).
They opted to not do single chip dlp's because of performance issues which, the first single chip dlp's from Samsung were awful. So, they held off for 4 yrs until they thought the technology was good enough to do a single chip dlp. The Samsung 5085 is a good unit, but it is just a monitor, plus where ya gonna put all your stuff? It has it's application and is a sexy unit but the Mits still has a better picture and tons more features. For the price consious folks, the Panasonic is a great buy. In my opinion it smokes the Samsung 63 and 74 series sets. Try looking at the Samsung, Mits, and Panasonic's side by side. Bring a copy of Star Wars, the newer one when the Jedi goes to the "water planet" the scene where he meets the long necked alien, where everything is bright white. The Samsungs make my eyes want to pop out of my head because there is NO detail in the scene and looks like a big white blur. If you are on a budget, also try the Toshiba, it is a descent picture for the price.

The $49 trim kit?
Jan 14, 2005 2:02AM PST

I'm interested b/c I have an infant that likes to crawl upto my 62525 and bang on the screen, but I don't like the glare and have to always shut off the lights behind me when watching something. BTW, does anyone know how much it cost to upgrade to the anti-glare screen? My Bernies rep said he won't have one until the end of Jan. thx.

62725
Jan 14, 2005 7:48AM PST

You can upgrade from the 525 to the 625 for about 200.00 or so. Or you can get the 825 series which has a built in HD-PVR and a 98% color tuned anti-glare screen as well for about 1500.00.

More help on screen shields please
Feb 3, 2005 11:28PM PST

I was about to buy the 52725 (for the built-in HDTV tuner and cable card slot), but felt the glare was too much. So, I went with the 52525 (arrived Feb 2).

Question 1 - can I remove the hi-glare screen saver from the 52725 and replace the black bezel trim with something that looks "finished". I understand that this means I have no screen saver.

Question 2 - is there an option to upgrade from the hi-glare sheild on the 52725 to a lo-glare version?

PS - I find the terminogly on the sheilds really confusing. Mit says the 52725 has an "anti-glare" sheild, but when I look at teh store, it actually seems to be very hi-glare. Then, the Mit website says that the 52525 has a "removable" sheild, but at the store there was nothing to remove!

Shield
Feb 3, 2005 11:57PM PST

They may have already removed the shield form the 52525 or is it that you at the 52327 which is new lower model that Mits just came out : No HD tuner , no cable card / no HDMI and No shield ! I would not buy this model since it use the old AMVP chip !

You were right - I got the 52327
Feb 6, 2005 10:31PM PST

Dealer says the 52525 is no longer being sold?

Any idea of the difference between the AMVP (in the 327) and the AMVP2(in the 525) filter?

Mistubishi DLP 62725
Jan 31, 2005 11:55AM PST

dear irishrulze

I have been looking to get the mits 62725 and have been impressed by it. But I do have a couple of questions that I am hoping that you can help clarify.

1. How far advanced is the mitsubishi technology when compared to the other DLP's in the market. I just dont want to my TV to be obsolete in terms of its features or capabilities in 2-3 years.

2. Also what features can I upgrade with the flashcard on this TV ? will the upgrade feature helpful to protect this TV from being osolete with with new features.

Your thoughts would on this would be great.

Also what do you see as the Cons of this TV in general ?

WHY DOES PCWORLD LIKE SAMSUNG?
Apr 2, 2005 4:47PM PST

When I read the PC World review (10/04) on the 50" DLPs, The Samsung was recommended. WHY not the Mitsubishi? I lean toward the 61-62" size. Which DLP is best in the larger size? Is the Sony's LCD Projection KDF55WF655 better than all of them at 55"?

Thanks,

DLP Convergence?
Apr 14, 2005 10:10AM PDT

just bought a Mits 62327 and notice with white letters against black background red and green fringing. It looks just like my old crt mits when it needed convergence. It appears as if red pixels are off one space to the left from the rest. Anyone else notice this? Anyone know of any means to correct this?

Thanks

Re: Mitsubishi DLP vs. Samsung DLP

I have the Samsung DLP. It's great, however you cannot watch non-hdtv programming in letterbox when your receiver is broadcasting in 720p or higher (I have a hi def Directivo and it alwas broadcasts in 1080i). Thus, all my shows are in 4:3 unless it's one of the hi def channels. On my plasma, I have the option of watching these shows in different formats (wide, zoom, etc). This is really disturbing as watching all these shows on 4:3 increases the likelyhood of burning lines in the tv. I would see if you can watch programs in 720p or higher in letterbox format with the Mitsubishi - if you can, I would go that route.

Hey just so you know, DLP, like LCD, has no burn-in effects. So no matter how long you watch shows in 4:3 mode it WILL NOT burn into the screen. I also have the Samsung 61'' DLP and absolutely love it.

Nov 28, 2004 2:32AM PST

I just bought the 46" Samsung and have been pleased so far with one exception, although I don't know if it is a TV problem or something else: with some DVDs I find the sound is slightly out of sync with the picture. Does anyone know what would cause that? It provides a great picture on High Def channels, though some come through wide format and others don't for some reason.

Progressive Scan
Dec 21, 2004 2:06PM PST

I had that issue with watching DVD through my reciever until i manually put it in DVD progressive Scan. I have a sony reciever and a samsung 5063 DLP Tv.

I have already been through 2 samsung DLPs.. Both the 5063 DLP tv. I was looking at the mitsubishi's in lieu of this samsung. I heard a high pitch noise from both tvs. When the TV is loud, I cant hear it, but my wife can hear the high pitch at all levels and most of the time she listens to it fairly quit anyway..

I heard the toshiba is pretty good - - but the guy at the store said he liked the mitsubishi better..

4:3 format
Apr 13, 2005 3:42AM PDT

I have the same problem witht he 4:3 format of analog broadcast on my plasma also. After tinkering around with it I believe it is not the TV, it is the connection. I am guessing you are using the HDMI connection. When using the digital connections (HDMI or DVI) you are bypassing the video processor on the tv which is what allows you to alter the format of the picture from the 4:3 to 16:9. Try using a component cable and see if you still have the problem.

Mits or Samsung
Dec 21, 2004 3:42AM PST

I am also stuck between the Mits 52525 and the Samsung 5685w or 5085w. Which one did you pick and how did you like it? I saw a more recent post for the Mits or Hitachi, why did you drop the Samsung from your possibilites?

Mits. Vs. Samsung
Dec 21, 2004 8:04AM PST

The Mits screen is what kills it for me (too much glare). Otherwise it is a decent DLP TV & very similar to the Samsung HLP5085 in terms of overall image quality. I still give the edge to Samsung and actually RCA has a nice looking set as well. I work for a retailer of digital TV's so i spend a lot of time with these different models looking for performance flaws. Anymore, they are all decent but Samsung is still ahead of the other manufacturers and I give high marks for their service & support plus they offer more inputs vs. other brands.

Go with Samsung
Dec 21, 2004 4:49AM PST

As someone else said, DLP/LCD has no burn in, therefore watching TV in 4:3 is no big deal. I have the Samsung HL-P5063W and I love it. I would buy another if I had the cash. The picture is gorgeous and the TV itself is gorgeous.

Someone mentioned earlier about DVD audio being out of snyc. I have never had that problem, but I don't use the TV speakers except when I watch TV. For DVD's and some TV I use my home theater system.

Samsung is on the cutting edge of great technology, go for it with them.

Samsung audio issues
Apr 14, 2005 3:54AM PDT

I have had an HLP5063 for about 3 months and plan on returning it for picture failure. After looking at Cnet reviews there are repeated issues with video/audio sync on the 63 and 85 series, particularly with surround sound systems and DVD's. I love my Samsung but was leaning toward replacing it with a Mits as the audio sync issue appears to be a design flaw. Perhaps it is a compatibility issue. What brand and model receiver do you have? DPL or DPL2? Etc.

just looked at both.. dealer will remove the protective shield and replace frame so the glare problem no longer exists.. mitsu is a bit cheaper.. the 62 inch is now about $3400 with $300 incentive..
plus it has firewire and a card reader in pc interface.. great advantages that the samsung doesnt have.

Samsung VS Mit.subishi Pros and Cons
Jan 13, 2005 11:37AM PST

I too am trying to decide on a DLP. I'd like either a 52" or 62" model. Have looked at Samsung, Mitsubishi, RCS and LG. Based on info gathered so far I will stick with an HD2+ chip.

Anyone have any recommendations.

Samsung
Jan 14, 2005 9:14AM PST

I finally decided on the Samsung 5085 over the Mits 52525. The glare screen bothered me and paying another $399 for the stand to bring it up to viewing height did as well. Also the Mits only has one digital input (HDMI)while the samsung has two (DVI and HDMI). I didn't care about the cable card becuase you can't use the cable guide feature with the cable card and with hundereds of channels I like to cruise the guide. I also knew I was going to get the DVR/HD cable box combo anyway so I wouldn't have used the cable card. Samsung has an HDMI, DVI and a pc imput so I will be albe to hook up the HD cable box and the DVD using a HDMI and DVI input (there is a noticable difference hooking up the dvd with DVI of HDMI rather than component) as well as my computer with the PC input. Fianlly the Samsung is more stylish, which I don't care the least about personally.

FYI there is a Mits 52325 model just released that is stipped down from the 525; DVI instead of HDMI, no cable card or net comand, and no glare screen (a benefit in my opinion).

Looking foward to the Samsung being delivered next week.

Mitsu DLP Fan Noise
Jan 25, 2005 6:26AM PST

I also love the Mitsubishi DLP but am beginning to get annoyed with the fan noise. Does anyone else have this problem with their DLP TV? If so, what did you do to quiet it down... I never noticed it on the Samsung. It reallly is annoying in a tense movie scene when everything is dead quiet and you hear the fan in the background. Thoughts?

Mitsu DLP Fan Noise
Feb 15, 2005 1:43AM PST

I've had the 62525 for a little over a month now. The only time I hear the fan is when I first turn it on. It's no louder than the fan in my pc. Once the unit is warmed up and the sound comes on, I don't hear it any more. This includes very hush parts of movies. My thought is, with a conclusion that the fan is not defective, to review how you have your unit situated. Is it in a cabinet with a back on it? Is it in a recessed wall so that whatever noise it makes is being echoed back into the room? It might be interesting to find out if the fan is speed sensitive so that if the unit doesn't have adequate ventillation, a temp sensor kicks it into high speed. That's what happened with my PC when I first stuck it into a computer desk. After I removed the entire knock out in the back panel, it was fine, however the fan definitely got my attention when it sped up.

Mits DLP Fan Noise
Feb 21, 2005 4:09AM PST

I just got my new Mits 62725 DLp last weekend. I can't say enough good things about it. I was concerned with the glare and fan noise issues as well, but both have been basically non-exsistent. I do get some glare during the day, but I don't really notice it too much because my last TV (Mits 55" RPTV) also had the protective shield on it. I must have gotten used to it.

As far as the fan noise is concerned, I have mine backed into the corner of the room. The installer thought it would amplify the noise if anything, but it's only noticable on start-up. As a previous poster pointed out, my PC fan on the other side of the room is more noticable than the TV fan. It's not really an issue with mine.

Mitsu DLP Fan Noise
Apr 12, 2005 12:03PM PDT

My 52725 fan noise is very annoying. I just had the lamp fan replaced, but it's still way too loud. I couldn't hear it in the store (even though there were no other customers or undue noise), but in my home I can hear it even with TV volume above the level I would normally listen use. I'm working with the store to resolve this issue. Not sure yet what the solution may be, but it might include changing brands of TV. Too bad, the Mitsubishi gets a great picture and has excellent connectivity.
