A family member purchased a Mitsubishi DLP 2 years ago for 5K. Cleaned "filter" several times- already replaced bulb. Today this DLP is completely DOA- dashboard light flashing- no picture. According to repair Tech from the Appliance dealer Showcase Entertainment (Tweeters): "Only a few weeks and $1,000 for a back ordered part- and a $300 service charge- will get this TV working again." But for how long is my question? Let's see, that's 5K for the TV + $300 for the bulb + $1300 for the repair. Close to $7,000.00 for 2 years of TV? What a bargain for Mitsubishi et al.
Seeing all the messages posted here, I'm going to advise that my family member buy another brand TV NOW and not even bother to throw good money into a (in my opinion) poorly designed product line. (And definitely not to waste any time on a lawyer infested lawsuit quagmire.) From day one, I was never impressed with that Mits TV set. It never looked near as good at their home as it does "tweaked" on the showroom floor. Appliance manufacturers and dealers sell HDTV on the dream of a better picture- but in reality the tech is still be tested ON YOU and is "temperamental" and requires lots of "extras"- (like when you bought your printer, got home, and oops- no printer cable included in the box or in the discussion with sales rep.) My 10 year old Sony 32" ANALOG TV is a better set than that 5K monolith. At least it always WORKS without any further "investments" or mortgages.
As for the notion that any TV/Appliance Dealer Company was "thinking" about dropping a 20,000 TV sets-a-year product line? Give me a break. As long as there is a lack of exposure to the general public on the lack of performance and QUALITY of these devices, $$$$money can and IS being made. "High Definition" is by definition STEEP and steeped in,...
Anyone who, after reading all these posts, spends over $1,000 on ANY of these commonly misunderstood and sometimes blatantly misrepresented "developing" TV products- will have regrets. They simply do not live up to their billing because a huge technology war is raging as to which "format" or "tech" will prevail- and RELIABLY permeate the market- and be RELIABLE Products. It's VHS vs. Beta- only with LOTS more players- and no END in sight this time- as with VHS. The best thing, and about the only reasonable thing, we as consumers can do is to boycott Mitsubishi at retail outlets in our area. Tell the sales reps and sales managers of our experiences with the sets and the Mitsubishi's "Customer Service" EACH TIME WE ENTER Tweeters, Best Buy, Circuit City etc.
The best thing we can do is tell EVERYONE we know- in our humble experience and opinion- DO NOT BUY overpriced sparkly stuff- especially from Mitsubishi- and ask them to also make a fuss about it too when they enter appliance sales outlets.
These big companies and dealers only hear and react to the sound of LOST REVENUE.
Your actions may just save some other poor guy Five Thousand PLUS Dollars.
