Mitsubishi DLP Television WD-57831 Class Action Lawsuit

Jul 25, 2007 11:43AM PDT

Hello,

Is anyone interested in getting in on a class action lawsuit against Mitsubishi and their (known?) defective DLP televisions? I've seen numerous posts regarding lamps, ballast boards, DLP engines, total rebuilds, poorly assembled thermistor sensors, air flow problems, useless repairmen, etc. etc.

I too am experiencing the joy of making 3 Diamond Card payments as well as HD cable programming payments all for a television that stopped working back on June 30, 2007 and has had 2, now a pending 3rd, unsucessful attempts by incompetent "authorized repair centers" to fix it. ITS ONLY 6 MONTHS OLD!!! Randomly replacing parts without performing electronic troubleshooting is totally unacceptable.

Anyway, please let me know if anyone would be willing to sign some papers and get this thing going.

Thanks!

I bought this expensive TV which I am still making payments on and the bulb went out a month past the warranty. I replaced it and the bulb has gone out again. I think it is ridculus to have purchased one of these TVs and the bulb keeps burning out.

Which Attorney?
Jan 16, 2008 10:34PM PST

We were contacted by an attorney after posting about our tv in December. I have started to collect our information on the 4 bulbs that have been replaced since Aug. 2006. I was just wondering which firm you were working with in this situation. It would be nice to have a consolidated effort.

Mitsubishi WD-57731 DLP TV
Jan 19, 2008 4:47AM PST

I purchased the tv in July of 06. I have had the lamp replaced 3 times and still had the image on the screen flickering constantly. I did not purchase an extended warranty foolishly thinking the only thing to go would be the lamp after a couple of years. Mitsubishi is unresponsive to my numerous complaints and denies any knowlege of other complaints about the lamps burning out as well as the flickering image on the screen. My tv will no longer turn on and I am fighting with PC Richards & Son where I purchased it to repair it. They told me that due to the fact that I didn't purchase the extended warranty it will probably cost me $1000 to repair! I paid $3000 for a piece of garbage, please help! I purchased my tv July 06 and have had the lamp replaced twice. Mitsubishi denies any complaints about the set and the store where I purchased it from wont help because I didnt purchase the extended warranty! The store is PC Richards and son on Long Island NY. The tv wont turn on any more and I dont know what to do. Ultimately I want it repaired at NO cost to me. I paid $3000 for it and cant even use it. Please let me know what I need to do to solve this dilema. psychosib002@aol.com

Mitsubishi WD-52631
Jan 20, 2008 12:02AM PST

Well, I just had my second bulb fail and I have had the TV for about 13 months. Just long enough for this second bulb NOT to be covered under warranty. I have the WD-52631, the 52" version of the 1080P. I thought I had researched this TV pretty good before I bought it and didn't see anything about the bulbs being this big of a problem. I am going to be upset if I am going to have to replace this bulb every 6 to 7 months. I have found the bulbs cheaper online than the $249 Mitsubishi wants, but they are the bulbs only without the housing. I will be more than happy to save $80 though to replace it within the housing myself. If anything progresses with this Class Action Lawsuit, I would be in on it. It's crazy to pay that much for a TV and the manufacture to expect the customer to pay for their design flaw. Please keep me posted. triton20@gmail.com

Thanks,

Aaron

Count me in. I am from Bakersfield, Ca. The main reason I purcased this tv above others was the 1080p. Now after I have an xbox and a sony bluray I find this out! Come on! I am going to call the company that sold this to me 1 1/2 Years ago and see if they are willing to do anything. I don't think I will accept anything short of replacement/upgrade.

Mitshbishi DLP - Dead Lamp Problem
Feb 10, 2008 11:36AM PST

Now that we know what "DLP" REALLY stands for; you need California, you got California.
It almost seems redundant to tell my story as it's nothing different to what I've read in this very long thread but I may as well...

We bought our WD57732 in December 2006. Everything was good. Until...June 2007, the FIRST bulb blew. Six months didn't seem right, I contacted Mitsubishi, they said 6 months did seem a bit soon as the bulbs typically last 2000 hours under "normal" use. They sent me a replacement bulb under the manufacturers warranty and supposidly they documented our account history of the early blowout and advised us to contact them again if we experience the same problem with less than 2000 hours on the new bulb.

We switched out the bulb, then a month later, the airflow issues began! At least once a week for about 2 months. Just my luck, I got a TV with an attitude. As a last ditch effort before I called a service technician (I KNEW I'd be without the TV for at least a month) I cleaned out all the air vents on the TV with a can of compressed air... it actually worked. I thought I'd be in good shape.

Then... today the bulb blew again (8 months since the last replacement). Why do these things always happen on the weekends or the holidays? You can't call anyone for service you can't get replacement parts - you're left to fester in your frustration! Coincidentily, that's how I found this thread. I was looking for some answers, I thought maybe someone out there in cyberspace would know what I was dealing with; I just didn't expect as many Happy!

We'll see what happens tomorrow when I call for service. First I'll try Mitsubishi like they told me to, but I not expecting anything positive. Luckily I have the extended warranty (and another bulb that covered). Needless to say, the Mitsubishi DLP is junk. I never even imagined my $2,400 TV would require $600 more a year in maintenance. And what a surprise, no one told me this when I bought the TV. What a disappointment.

I too am interested in a class action lawsuit. Like I mentioned before, I'm from California - actually just around the corner from Mitsubishi's headquarters in Irvine. I tempted to pay them a visit...

Hope we see some results!

Kim

Mitsu TV

Hi Kim,

We must be twins, to a degree. I bought a 57732 in December of 06 as a X-mas\graduation present. June, the bulb went out and was replaced under warranty. In January or so, the second bulb went out. Unlike yours, mine was not covered by the extended warranty I bought. The extended warranty covers everything BUT the bulb. $250 later my TV is working. I'm planning on another six months or so until this bulb goes. My TV has a great picture but the bulbs suck big huge time!

Mitsubishi has failed me
Feb 18, 2008 9:52AM PST

I too, like everyone else has the same lamp problem. I have had the television for about 18 months and had the cooling system go out twice and this is the second time the lamp has gone out. I have the model WD 57732. The sad thing is that I could have gotten any tv, but the guy at Fry's said this was the best in it's kind. And they too have given me the run around. I will write to the company after I type this. I have never been so disappointed, my first big purchase and I buy a dud. So sad, my friend has a sony and has had it longer with no problems. Hope we can get Mitisubishi to do something about this, it is just not fair.

Mitsubishi Class Action
Mar 13, 2008 12:55AM PDT

Count me in, I have a WD 62725 that I purchased 05-26-2005 and it has been a real headache. Like most people I thought that only the bulb would go out after 2000 hours of viewing. It actually went on in December of 2006, which was not too bad, but I only watch it on the Weekends, I travel all week. The real problem is the quality of the picture when it works. The picture is way too dark and you can't lighten it up. I have since bought two other DLP's (Samsung) and they were half the price and have twice the picture. I could almost buy another one of these for the price to have a bulb replaced in my Mitsubishi. Today I am having to replace my bulb once again and I bet it does not have 1000 hours on it.

WD-62825 in California
Jul 6, 2008 11:13AM PDT

Greetings,

I just came across this forum while searching for answers to our Mitsubishi DLP problems. We spent about $4,000 on this set 3 years and 2 months ago. We haven't used this set heavily, as we are not home often. We've had to replace a bulb already and now, as I've read seemingly everywhere online, we have encountered the dreaded Flashing Green Light of Death.

We are disgusted and sickened. We purchased this set because it was supposedly top of the line and would last a long time. We feel totally betrayed by Mitsubishi.

If you are still looking for Californians who are interested in the class action lawsuit, please let me know!

Thank you in advance,

Daniel Chavez

Lack of exposure
Jan 19, 2008 5:49AM PST

A family member purchased a Mitsubishi DLP 2 years ago for 5K. Cleaned "filter" several times- already replaced bulb. Today this DLP is completely DOA- dashboard light flashing- no picture. According to repair Tech from the Appliance dealer Showcase Entertainment (Tweeters): "Only a few weeks and $1,000 for a back ordered part- and a $300 service charge- will get this TV working again." But for how long is my question? Let's see, that's 5K for the TV + $300 for the bulb + $1300 for the repair. Close to $7,000.00 for 2 years of TV? What a bargain for Mitsubishi et al.
Seeing all the messages posted here, I'm going to advise that my family member buy another brand TV NOW and not even bother to throw good money into a (in my opinion) poorly designed product line. (And definitely not to waste any time on a lawyer infested lawsuit quagmire.) From day one, I was never impressed with that Mits TV set. It never looked near as good at their home as it does "tweaked" on the showroom floor. Appliance manufacturers and dealers sell HDTV on the dream of a better picture- but in reality the tech is still be tested ON YOU and is "temperamental" and requires lots of "extras"- (like when you bought your printer, got home, and oops- no printer cable included in the box or in the discussion with sales rep.) My 10 year old Sony 32" ANALOG TV is a better set than that 5K monolith. At least it always WORKS without any further "investments" or mortgages.
As for the notion that any TV/Appliance Dealer Company was "thinking" about dropping a 20,000 TV sets-a-year product line? Give me a break. As long as there is a lack of exposure to the general public on the lack of performance and QUALITY of these devices, $$$$money can and IS being made. "High Definition" is by definition STEEP and steeped in,...
Anyone who, after reading all these posts, spends over $1,000 on ANY of these commonly misunderstood and sometimes blatantly misrepresented "developing" TV products- will have regrets. They simply do not live up to their billing because a huge technology war is raging as to which "format" or "tech" will prevail- and RELIABLY permeate the market- and be RELIABLE Products. It's VHS vs. Beta- only with LOTS more players- and no END in sight this time- as with VHS. The best thing, and about the only reasonable thing, we as consumers can do is to boycott Mitsubishi at retail outlets in our area. Tell the sales reps and sales managers of our experiences with the sets and the Mitsubishi's "Customer Service" EACH TIME WE ENTER Tweeters, Best Buy, Circuit City etc.
The best thing we can do is tell EVERYONE we know- in our humble experience and opinion- DO NOT BUY overpriced sparkly stuff- especially from Mitsubishi- and ask them to also make a fuss about it too when they enter appliance sales outlets.
These big companies and dealers only hear and react to the sound of LOST REVENUE.
Your actions may just save some other poor guy Five Thousand PLUS Dollars.

Wait a minute...NEVER said picture was Showroom Pony Show!!!
Jan 19, 2008 6:37AM PST

I posted and joined the link due to one bulb/lamp issue thus far... If one goes to the Mits web site, my display falls into the extended warranty, due to the air-flow message. http://www.mitsubishi-tv.com/j/i/18312/Warranties.html?mid=125622
This was repaired in a timely manor with no hassle or re-occurrence. My point is, I do not want to replace lamps on a regular basis.
My Diamond WD-57831 is the best 1080p I have seen @ 57". Never have I set foot in a Best Buy or Circuit City w/ the intent to buy a display... This is a Diamond , from certified Diamond dealer...I view it as a "display". My TV is in the garage...
It is part of a professionally installed, monitored and serviced audio/video system... 5.1, DTS, DVD-A, via Triad, Lexicon, RTI, etc.
I selected the Mits over other rear screen displays and I am very pleased with the picture, but not the potential lamp life.

We have purchased two Vizio's in the last year at Costco, one a plasma 42 inch, the other is 32 or 37 inch not a plasma, and we are soooo happy with them both. The HD is like being there.

My Diamond Mitsubishi is a piece of expensive junk. I totally agree with you. Don't put another dime in that TV. Ours is sitting in our family room and dead as a doornail. Green light flashing. I will not put another penny in it.

Mitsubishi WD62628 to Sony Playstation 3 connection
Jan 10, 2008 3:44AM PST

I have the WD62628 as well and will have the same problem. I understand you can send 1080P through the IEEE 1394a (firewire) port on these TV's. I beleive the Sony Playstateion 3 has a USB 2.0 port out but no firewire out. I did see a "USB to firewire adapter" on the internet somewhere for $119. It comes in a US protocal and a PAL (European and Asia) version. You will want to make sure the firewire out is 1394a, not 1394b. Our user manuals explain there is a difference and may require an adapter. It is a new item on the market; I hope it works. Prices will probably come down. I do not have a Playstation 3 yet, but am wondering if you resolve the issue. Keep me posted. Good luck.

PS3 connection
Jan 15, 2008 9:43PM PST

Hello,
I suppose that the converter could be used. I am just irritated by the fact that this information was not made known by either the Mitsubishi ads/company or by the vendor that I bought the TV from (Tweeters). The main reason why I bought this particular tv was for the 1080p viewing option so that I could use the PS3 to it's fullest potential. I am waiting for a resolution before I go out and spend any more money.
