Mitsubishi DLP Television WD-57831 Class Action Lawsuit

Jul 25, 2007 11:43AM PDT

Hello,

Is anyone interested in getting in on a class action lawsuit against Mitsubishi and their (known?) defective DLP televisions? I've seen numerous posts regarding lamps, ballast boards, DLP engines, total rebuilds, poorly assembled thermistor sensors, air flow problems, useless repairmen, etc. etc.

I too am experiencing the joy of making 3 Diamond Card payments as well as HD cable programming payments all for a television that stopped working back on June 30, 2007 and has had 2, now a pending 3rd, unsucessful attempts by incompetent "authorized repair centers" to fix it. ITS ONLY 6 MONTHS OLD!!! Randomly replacing parts without performing electronic troubleshooting is totally unacceptable.

Anyway, please let me know if anyone would be willing to sign some papers and get this thing going.

Thanks!

Mitsubishi DLP television WD 57831 class action lawsuit
Jan 15, 2010 4:01PM PST

This is the fourth time I've had to replace the rear projector lamp in the last 2 years! The lamp only lasts about 4 to 5 months before blowing! I'll sign whatever it takes, this Mitsubishi DLP tv WD 57831 was way too expensive for the lamp to be blowing every 5 months!

Mitsubishi law suit
Jan 28, 2010 2:25PM PST

We purchased WD-62725 from Tweeter (which is now belly up) and we are left with a giant projection televison that is useless. The blinking green light from hell and now the TV does not power on at all. We have replaced the light bulb and have had noting but problems since. Paid $4600 for this beast over 4 years ago, we were told this was the TV of the future 1080p, HDMI ECT..... we have a 1080I NON working DLP tv. I would love to take part in any class action law suit, and also am open to any repair feedback....

Mitsubishi T.V. class action lawsuit
Feb 23, 2010 9:14AM PST

Mits class action suit: I am interested in being part of class action law suit. I bought [2] model # WD62725 models. I gave [1] away because I was unhappy with the clarity of the T.V.. The other one I put in my bed room. I gave 3900.00 for the 1st one and bought the other for 3000.00. I had the green light blinking and the T.V. would go off and not come back on. I called a T.V. repair company out and they said that Mitsuibishi was having a serious problem with that and they had to replace the main chassis. That fixed my problem and nine months later the new chassis went out with a different problem. I have on every input no picture with scribbly yellow lines on a blue back ground [ no picture ]. Called the repair company back out. I was fortune it to have a service contract that covered the first chassis and the second is under warranty for one year. I would be interested in joining a class action suit. My name is David Leewright and my e-mail address is d.leewright@yahoo.com

why replace lamp engine
Jan 16, 2010 2:20AM PST

Did you have the dreaded white spots? I am fight with Mitsu right now about the white spots that multiply daily. The repair company said is probalby the engine which is over $600 to repair. Is that what you found? They told me no one had EVER reported this problem and there was NO recalls.

RE: why replace lamp engine
Jan 16, 2010 2:59AM PST

Mits has had problems with the light engines on there DLP's I had mine replaced as they extended the warranty by 2 years on certain model DLP's with light engine problems. So them saying that they have never had these problems is BS. You need to try and speak to someone in california. DO a search through this thread as someone posted a name and number of someone in California to contact.

what model was yours? Mine is WD65733. We replaced bulb last year and now have the white dots multipling daily.

Mitsubishi DLPs are defective - lemons.
Jan 28, 2010 7:49AM PST

I own a Mitsubishi DLP Model 73272 that I bought for $5467 in 1/06. Optical engine @$1376 broke down in 1.5 years. After arguing for a while, it was finally replaced for free. Diagnosis fee not refunded. In a year, same part faltered. Replaced for free. Now, for the third time, the optical engine broke down! For a TV that costly, should it break down like that easily? I don't think so. I maintain that our common problem should be addressed in a class suit.

lets get this show on the road
Feb 1, 2010 9:35PM PST

Its been since 2007 since there has been talk about a class action against mitsu~ I have a 62" and have had to replace the bulb several times over the last 4 1/2 years (at $250 a crack) Also, just recently the light engine went, repair came to fix it under warranty (we bought a 5 year, going to expire in oct 2010) he came with a refurbished light engine and it did not work. Still waiting for him to come back and put the right one in, its been a month. Argh! Now I have wires everywhere, a 25" tv sitting on my livingroom floor and a 2 year old running around. My 20 year old 25" tv should be very nice watching the superbowl on this year, 20 feet away.......Anyway, Mitsu ticks me off, lets get something done. I dont have the knowledge to start something, but is willing to help whoever that may have some law suit knowledge.

I too own one of those 5000 dollar 73" frauds
Mar 25, 2010 1:15PM PDT

First of all it is not 1080p like it says ON THE TV, and I was told when I bought it. The light light went out in one year and 3mos. 2 mos later the power board AND light engine went out. After months of fighting with Mitsubishi they were replaced. Now two years later the light engine is out again. First I didn't get the TV I was told I was buying (1080p) and in 4 years I have been through 2 bulbs, 1 power board and 2 light engines. What a bargain for a 5000 dollar TV that one year later sold for 1999. When are we going to get this class action suit going. I don't care if the lawyers get all the money or not as long as MITSUBISHI gets hit hard enough to put them under. A suit like that will be worth it's weight in gold just for their bad publicity especially now with the market so soft. Mitsubishi has gone from the most trusted name in TV's to the biggest fraud. It's time the public knew the truth!!!!!!

Jul 28, 2010 2:54PM PDT

Bought my WD73727 10/05, replaced lamp around 11/08, replaced light engine 11/08 twice (first replacement faulty), now experiencing same solarized/photo negative picture quality suggesting need for another light engine replacement. I bought extended 5yr warranty so I'm still covered...for now. I'm calling retailer and Mitsubishi in the morning to see about getting my money back for when this problem occurs again.

I, too, would like to see a class action lawsuit against Mitsubishi for these TVs. My second lamp in two years failed last week and I am now waiting for a replacement. There is clearly a defect in the design of these sets.

Count me in on the lawsuit for WD-62725 (5yr old)
Feb 10, 2010 1:08PM PST

Purchased from Good Guys with extended warranty from GE
Now has wavy lines and after a power outage have blinking timer light
Have been waiting two months for Mitsubishi to mail out chassis part to Precision TV to repair

Hopefully this fixes it, but shocked at the quality for a $2.7k set

Feb 10, 2010 7:48AM PST

I have a WD-52725 DLP 52" and have experienced the blinking light problem several times. I continues to get more and more difficult to get the TV to come back on. The problem can probably be fixed with the on-line fixes but they are a lot of work and Mitsubishi should be the one paying for this piece of crap. I would be happy to sign on to a lawsuit.

I realize this is late and the link to you may be broken but if not, has this action gone anywhere? I don't really want a suit I just want a reasonable use of my TV but this would get the message through I am in.

reply to the class action suit thread
Feb 20, 2010 12:44PM PST

I agree! I bought a 52 inch DLP tv in 2002 and we had many issues with it but we bought a 5 year warranty. Had service men out 4 times and had lamps replaced twice and then had the chassie replaced within that 5 year period. Unfortunately after all of that I divorced and gave my ex husband the tv. BUT I thought we just had a dud. So I found another TV same make and model mine ends with 65 and this TV I bought off craigslist for 100.00 *THOUGHT WOW WHAT A DEAL* and when I brought this lovely piece home it started overheating after 3 hours. Now I've had it less than 5 months and guess what? Had to call a repair guy out and guess what he said? It's the CHASSIE AGAIN... same thing wiht this one... so what they build these things with bad chassies so after a year you HAVE to get it rebuilt or buy another tv? It's going to cost 700.00 to replace the chassie in this POS so I'm going to recycle it and get a different TV, this time a different brand and something with a better picture.

DLPs - Good idea poor application
Feb 21, 2010 12:40AM PST

Sorry to hear about your later issues. I actually found in my archive an idea someone was successful with by putting a switch on the power lead going to the FMT board. I was very skeptical but it actually works for my situation. Takes a little of geekyness to perform the operation but if it makes this monster last another two years I am good with it.
Hope you have better success with the new set. If I were looking I would go for a Panasonic Plasma. I was looking at the 58" G10.
Cheers,
Russell

I have WD-52327
Mar 12, 2010 12:30AM PST

I have the Mitsubishi WD-52327. I have now replaced the bulb 3 times. This last time the Bulb blew out without any warning. I put the new one in & reset the TV It still either doesn't come on, The green power light comes on then after a minute it starts flashing green on the lamp light then it goes red & shuts back down or when I finally get it on we have to leave it on all day. The place I got the bulb from says its now the Ballast going out.So I found this when I was search for answers , I told my husband about this & he said yes if we could get in on this to do it. My Father had a CURTIS MATHIS Big Screen 52" when they first made them. It lasted for him for 13 YRS before he died & I got it. I had it in storage for a while & it finally went out on me. This is sad that we've come a long way in Electronics & this happens. We've had our Mitsubishi WD-52327 for 3yrs.

Mitsubishi DLP WD-52327

I have a Mitsubishi DLP WD-52327 that I bought in January 2006. I have replaced the bulb at least three times. The last time was in December in 2009 and the picture was not bright at all afterward.

Is there any law suit in action? If so, I might be a candidate for participation.

Wow - It's been two years and still this is a problem ...
Apr 16, 2010 1:32PM PDT

That lawyer in California 2 years ago indicated the class-action suit was only for California residents - never heard back from him.

In the mean time, Mitsubishi re-designed their bulb housing (at least for the WD-57831) that incorporated larger holes in one of the screens to allow for more air flow. This new part number is 915P049A20 (the "A" is the key) - make sure any replacements are of the "A" type. The "A" type has the small screen replaced with a thin sheet of metal with larger holes in it. My "A" housing lasted 24 months!

My suggestion - regularly clean (vaccuum) the bulb housing and the compartment where the bulb housing goes. Do so gently. If you don't, dust, hair, etc. WILL build up on the housing. Don't touch the bulb, and don't break anything in there. AND, make sure the television is unplugged !!!

Here's a video from spring of 2000 regarding my troubles ...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jua17Q8z7X4

I'm really disappointed to see this problem is still going on. FYI, we bought ours originally from Fry's Electronics. We also bought the 5 year extended warranty, which is supposed to include one (1) replacement bulb. Well, now Fry's is telling us we used up our one bulb from them BUT WE DID NOT - WE DEALT DIRECTLY WITH MITSUBISHI DIRECTLY ON ALL PREVIOUS FAILURES AND NEVER INVOLVED FRY'S OR THEIR EXTENDED WARRANTY. TOTAL 100% *******T AND CR*P!!!

Mitsubishi class action lawyer

If that California lawyer did not think it was better to include the rest of the US than you need to get a "brighter" lawyer.

I, personally, have not had bulb issues. I just replaced one, now my third bulb, after about 3.5 years of, what I would consider, heavy use. It was pretty dim at the end and I find the OEM bulbs now for $115. I still have issues with the blinking green light. I have a work around but I am not happy with Mitsubishi over it since they take no responsibility for the flaw.
Keep plugging away, guys,
Russell

What happened in California was that the Case was thrown out. Typical BS by a Judge. The first generation of Mits TV's won't even work 1080P so you can't hook a blue ray player up to them. Why do you guys think they switched to laser technology? Because of all the bulb problems. They lost a lifetime customer in me.

Apr 23, 2010 2:27AM PDT

OK, here's mine.

I took delivery of my set in 2 / 2007.

1) Bulb went bad - Mitsu sent a bulb
2) 6/30/08: False overheating - came and replaced sensor
3) 7/10/08: Bulb went bad mitsu sends "new style bulb and housing"
4) 11/6/08: Bulb again
5) 9/21/09: Fast orange and shut down - no recurrence
6) 4/7/10: Bulb again
7) 4/12/10: Fast orange and shut down

and a few more I failed to write down.

Thanks goodnes for my extended warranty.

Presently an awesome CSR at my retailer is beating on Mitsu and Warranty Company to get some permanent resolution. Otherwise, I guess I'll throw it out the day the warranty expires LOL

Fast orange and shut down - Bulb replacement

Your problem is not just your set, but your authorized service dealer is not diagnosing the problem. I had the same problems, called the Mits Customer Relations, 800-332-2119, and they set up a local authorized service dealer who replace a Thermal Sensor. I have been problem free for a year. They also extended my warranty by 2 years.
