Mitsubishi DLP Television WD-57831 Class Action Lawsuit

Jul 25, 2007 11:43AM PDT

Hello,

Is anyone interested in getting in on a class action lawsuit against Mitsubishi and their (known?) defective DLP televisions? I've seen numerous posts regarding lamps, ballast boards, DLP engines, total rebuilds, poorly assembled thermistor sensors, air flow problems, useless repairmen, etc. etc.

I too am experiencing the joy of making 3 Diamond Card payments as well as HD cable programming payments all for a television that stopped working back on June 30, 2007 and has had 2, now a pending 3rd, unsucessful attempts by incompetent "authorized repair centers" to fix it. ITS ONLY 6 MONTHS OLD!!! Randomly replacing parts without performing electronic troubleshooting is totally unacceptable.

Anyway, please let me know if anyone would be willing to sign some papers and get this thing going.

Thanks!

Anyone in Massachusetts who has a defective Mitsubishi TV less than 4 years old that failed? I know a firm that is investigating a class action.

Mitsubishi class action

I live in Massachusetts and I have a WD-57731. I've had it going on 3 years now and am on the 4th bulb (which will probably go within the next month or so). I can't get a good enough reason why it's doing it. To all those of you who try different ways to fix it yourself or even try to rationalize it...you shouldn't have to do this. Shame on you! It's not your job to have to do this. A company should stand behind what they sell and if they don't, they never will. To everyone's point, you pay X amount of dollars for a TV you're told is high quality, you get it home, and 6 months later WHAM! Bulb is out, and now you've got to try to get one under warranty. If you were like me, my first bulb went just after the warranty wore off and then the other 3 followed suit. So I was stuck paying $299 times 4...AFTER paying a lot for this TV! I know of at least 4 people who bought the same model year TV (different sizes though) and have the SAME issue as me and all of you. It's not even a small percentage of the customers, ALOT of people have the same problems but there's no replacements or free repairs going on anywhere.

The solution they're giving me now is to have a repairman come out and look at it to repair it, yet I have to pay the repairman $100 to come out and look at it. Why can't Mitsubishi just send someone out to do it instead!!! I've had it with this TV and I've had it with Mitsubishi. I don't know what to do now.

Nov 23, 2009 9:48PM PST

Model Number: WD-57731
Part Description: LAMP (150W) (V33/V33Y/V33+) 'G'
Part No: 915P049010
Price: 249.00

At least every 6mos i have to fork over this much since the first time it went out.The first one lasted a year which i would love for it to repeat, but alas it has not. I have owned this tv since the day of its release in 2005. Its very wierd how it goes out almost the same amount of time no matter the manufacture of the bulb which there is quite a few out there. Im hardpressed to tell people that mitsubishi has a great tv seeing how no one will talk to me with out paying 50hr. It has been to the repair shop to find out if something was causing it to go out but 4 diffrent companies tell me everyone has the same issue with the crappy life on the bulbs. At this point im not sure if i should sue the bulb manafacturers or mits. But definetly sign me up, i can be reached at ohyeager@yahoo.com

62 "OUT AGAIN
Nov 29, 2009 12:27AM PST

THE LAMP WENT OUT ABOUT A YEAR AFTER THE TV WAS PURCHASED AND IT COST ME OVER $500 FOR THE SERVICE CALL AND REPAIR.

THE LAMP LIGHT HAS COME ON TWICE IN FIVE MONTHS. IN JUNE 2009, MY NEIGHBOR REPLACED THE LAMP AND THE SET WORKED FINE. NOW THE LAMP
LIGHT IS ON AGAIN AND NO T.V. I CHECKED WITH THE SELLER OF THE LAMPS AND WAS TOLD MAYBE THE PROBLEM IS THE "BALLAST", WHATEVER THAT IS.

I HAVE A "CERTIFIED MITSUBISHI REPAIRMAN" COMING ON MONDAY, 11/30/09, TO REPAIR THE SET AGAIN.
I'VE HAD A 32" SONY PLASMA TV FOR OVER 7 YEARS AND NEVER A PROBLEM.

THIS IS WHY I'D LIKE TO ENTER INTO YOUR CLASS ACTION SUIT.

Bad Lamps!!
Nov 29, 2009 2:50AM PST

If I'm not mistaken, the ballast is the enclosure in which the lamp is installed. I've been told (by mits reps) that the ballast/enclosure had been redesigned with larger holes in the screens for airflow. I was supposed to receive this redesigned lamp but the one I received was identical to what I've had in the past. Watch this forum, I'm waiting for a phone call from Mason LLP (a law firm in DC who took on Toshiba for the same issue)to see if their interested in jump starting this class action.

Jan 12, 2010 5:19AM PST

It's funny how they play the bulb game. I was told my for my old set would cost approximately $375.00 dollars. When I thought it was the bulb causing the trouble, as so stated via MITS., I found a TV repair center in center city Philadelphia, who carried the same bulb, they sold the bulb to me for $140.00 dollars. So the old set, which is the better set has a new bulb in it and the old bulb, which was still good, is resting on my garage shelf. My campaign against MITS. is going very well. Having flyers printed up and copied at "Staples" is not costly event. We have to let the people know what is going on. I'm suprised the Media hasen't picked up on this story yet.

Model Number
Jan 10, 2010 1:05AM PST

Your model number would read; WD-62825, this is just an example.
62 is the size of the TV screen and the other three numbers represent the model of the TV. I tried to reply to the fellow who was asked to pay $600.00 dollars to ship out his TV for repair. I don't know why MITS. would asked for that amount when they only asked me for $250.00 dollars. And this was to be paid to the servis Rep. for removing the TV from my home and returning same.(Which they damaged in the interium) Why don't you write the big man in Tokyo Japan and asked him why the defference in pricing. Why you are at it, ask him to terminate the idiots in the consumers Dept. in CA. His mailing address is as follows;Mr. Yorihiko Kojima, Chief Excutive Officer, Mitsubishi Corporation Office, 3-1 Marvnouchi 2-Chome Chiyoda-KU, Tokyo, 100-8086, Japan. Postage is only $.95 cents. I plane to drop him another letter asking him to rid the consumers office of Julio, Criss and their supervisor "Mitch"

Mitsubishi Class Action Suit
Dec 24, 2009 3:47AM PST

I will jump on it with both feet!!
Bought this "State of the Art" 62" Home Theater TV in June 09 from QVC for $1599. plus tax, on 5 monthly payments to my credit card. When I e-mailed QVC to complain about the loud, vibrating speakers on the TV, I was sent a general "sorry it's past the 30 day return period" e-mail from Dan McDerrmott, head of QVC customer service in which effect told me, we got the money, deal with it!
I contacted Mitsubishi. The service rep told me to get on the floor and push the buttons she indicated to "fix it". I strongly insisted that they send a repairman since my Arthritic Spine and Knees would not allow me to do that. My husband is a stroke patient and cannot help me. A repairman arrived a week later. He said the "Audio Board" was blown, He would need to get a replacement from Mitsubishi. Last night he replaced the
Audio Board----still massive problems, the speakers are blown and bad he said. He said Mitsubishi sent him a defective part. He has to get a new board. In the meantine the "State of the Art" TV now has a messed up smeary, hazy, picture on top of the audio problems. Then I was told that the illuminating lamp would have to be replaced yearly, at $200. a pop! QVC's presentation of ths piece of junk never mentioned replacing illumination lamps or I NEVER would have bought it! I am more than upset and frustrated. I bought this TV thinking it would last me the rest of my life, since my Panasonic's always lasted 12yrs plus and did not die, I GAVE THEM AWAY and they are still going strong! It want Mitsubishi/QVC to refund my money and come and get this "State of the Art" piece of garbage out of my home--NOW!

Most Sincerely,
Jean A. Jones

Dec 24, 2009 12:53PM PST

I will remember the Magnuson Moss Act when Mitsubishi calls to check on the status of my "repairs". I DO NOT want this TV replaced or upgraded---I want it gone. I feel I was duped since QVC never stated that lamps must be replaced and filters need to be vacuumed and cleaned. What a farce! I refuse to support this TV for life with $200.00 replacement lamps.

Update on my "State of the Art" piece of JUNK!
Jan 10, 2010 2:19AM PST

On Thursday Jan. 14, 2010 Mits will be delivering a new LCD-52" LT52151 to my home. The war raged on around here for weeks. The repairman was here 3 times. Each visit revealed more and more problems. First visit revealed the audio board was blown. The repairman said a new board would have to be ordered from Mits. A week later (2nd visit) he was back with it in a sealed carton from Mits. He tore the TV apart, installed the new part, turned it on, same sound issues, only this time he discovered that the speakers were both blown and needed to be replaced. In the meantime the TV picture went haywire. The picture was Fluorescent green, purples and grays. The pepole on TV all looked looked like Barack Obamas publicized picture while running for President, all shaded, shadowy, blotchy and smeary. The repairmans third visit (3 hours) proved to be the last straw. He completely dismantled the TV. Front and back of the TV were removed. There were parts and screws all over my living room. He placed 3 calls to Mits Technical assistance for advise. With each call he said, "I did that, I tried that, twice". This was after he;

Replaced the Audio Board.
Replaced the Speakers.
Got sound but no picture.
Power board probably blown.
Light engine problems.
And finally the lamp blew too.

As he was finishing his last call to Mits Tecnical Assistance I asked to speak to them. I told them I wanted this "State of the Art" piece of junk out of my home and out of my life. I want my money back! They said they would have some one call to negotiate. I got a call telling me to have the repairman remove the TV when he left. they said, NO, I could not have my money back! They would replace the WD-60737. I said "NO", I don't EVER want a DLP TV in my home. I then said the only replacement I would consider is a LCD unit. I agreed to pay $740.00 addition to the $1599.00 I paid originally for the LCD unit.
So now I await the new TV. I will be watching it like a hawk for signs of trouble. I am so grateful to be out from under watching and waiting for the blinking lights and a lamp blowouts. Through out all of this we have been watching an old 32" Panasonic portable. In 40+ years of Panasonic ownership I never once had a TV repairman cross my threshold, ONCE. I should have learned my lesson and stuck with Panasonic, but the QVC presentation made the Mits DLP sound like it was the ultimate TV for the future.
QVC has lost a L-O-N-G time customer thanks to this total TV debacle. They refused to stand behind their product and ME in all of this.

If you are looking for a TV and you hear Mitsubishi DLP----RUN, RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN unless you love stress and aggravation. As for me, MITSUBISHI is he dirtiest word I have ever heard in my life.....

Class Action Lawsuite
Jan 10, 2010 12:09AM PST

Sir: I would be more then happy to be part of a Class Action Lawsuit against Mitsubishi Electronics. My professional back ground, Ret. Phila.Police offer, Ret. State Investigator (PA), and Ret. Criminal Investigator (U.S.Govt.) We the people have a darn good case against MITS. Some of MITS. actions fall under "Theft By Deception" and Retail Theft" What is nneded is a point of contact for the consumer to reach the retained Law Firm. If MITS. hired a manufacturer to build the TV's in question, then MITS. is still responsable for the defective TV's. And if MITS. built the defective TV's, they are solely responsable for the defective TV's. As of this writting I am still waiting for the consumer manager in CA to reimburse me my $590.00 dollars, extended warranty cost, which he stated he was authorized to released to me. Speaking of repair centers. I had a service Rep.come to my home when I first encountered the problem. He pulled the bulb from the unit, at which time I told him, the problem is not the bulb. The bulb was not burned out. He pulled it out anyway. When he looked at it he made the following statement, "Well it's almost burned out" How dumb is that? Either it is or it isen't.
I then disclosed to him the problem is associated with the bulb, the heat from the bulb has fried the compacitors in the power unit. He never argued the piont as a matter fact he stated, yep we have had to replace a lot of compacitors via MITS. Remember,it's your hard earned dollar that was spent!

white dot issues?
Jan 14, 2010 8:41AM PST

has anyone else gotten the dreaded white dots that multiply daily on their screen? We have replaced the lamp once and now we are getting the white dots. Mits CS said it is not under warranty and probably just needs cleaned but could not tell me how expensive that was or even if that was the problem. If it is like the Samsung white dots, it is a very expensive repair.

Feb 6, 2010 8:10AM PST

I too would like to be apart of this lawsuit. I have the WD57831. Have replaced more bulbs than years I have had the TV. I watch alot of TV but religiously every months I am replacing a bulb. I have no problems with picture quality whatsoever. In fact I love the TV when it works. DLPLampsource is awesome because they have a 1 year warranty on the bulbs but only a 90 on the replacement. so its basically a buy 1 get 1 free for me. If this suit has any wings at all I would like to do whatever I can to help.
