Mitsubishi DLP Television WD-57831 Class Action Lawsuit

Jul 25, 2007 11:43AM PDT

Hello,

Is anyone interested in getting in on a class action lawsuit against Mitsubishi and their (known?) defective DLP televisions? I've seen numerous posts regarding lamps, ballast boards, DLP engines, total rebuilds, poorly assembled thermistor sensors, air flow problems, useless repairmen, etc. etc.

I too am experiencing the joy of making 3 Diamond Card payments as well as HD cable programming payments all for a television that stopped working back on June 30, 2007 and has had 2, now a pending 3rd, unsucessful attempts by incompetent "authorized repair centers" to fix it. ITS ONLY 6 MONTHS OLD!!! Randomly replacing parts without performing electronic troubleshooting is totally unacceptable.

Anyway, please let me know if anyone would be willing to sign some papers and get this thing going.

Thanks!

joining law suit against mitsubishi
Jun 24, 2009 10:31AM PDT

My television was bought in Feb. 2007 as of today, I am on the third bulb to be out and noone wants to do anything about fixing the problem because I do not have an extended warranty. I would love to get in on a law suit. I am tired of spending $250 every 6 - 9 months to replace a bulb.

I am on the market for a TV plasma or LCD, wide screen, possibly a 42 inches.
After I read all this, I will make sure I will not get close to a Mitsubishi TV, or even any appliance with that name.
I thank you all for bringing this to my attention.

The class action lawsuit regarding failing light bulbs was rejected by a judge. Not sure if a lawsuit about other problems has been started.

I am willing to hear more about your plans and status of your open call for participants.
I have had numerous and classic problems with my 57831. I want Mits to replace it with 57835 model. That would be my preferred remedy. Please contact me.

Class Action
Aug 9, 2009 1:35PM PDT

If anyone is interested in trying a class action suit again, please email me and let me know. I would definitely be willing to participate. We've had to replace the bulb on our TV about every 6-8 months since we bought it. Luckily we have the extended warranty but I'm not sure how many more bulbs they'll provide. We replaced one with the original warranty and 3 since.

Failing bulb
Aug 9, 2009 2:04PM PDT

The trick is to take the bulb assembly out every month or so and vacuum off the dust from the screen filter. My first bulb failed after 6 months. The second after 7 months or so. That was the last bulb I bought.

I have one of these tv's as well and getting wavy lines and really bad colors. Based on what I have ready I am not sure it is worth reparing. Will the bulb fix this issue or am I just out of luck?

That is not a bulb issue. It sounds like your light engine is going out which has been a common problem with these TV's.

Warn consumers not to buy Mitsubishi!
Sep 6, 2009 10:11PM PDT

I am getting burned on my 62825 with the blinking green light of death.

How about a facebook page where everyone sends in a photo of them and their broken Mitsubishi Tv. Or contact the local news to warn against buying Mitsubishi DLP's. Build a web site dedicated to warning consumers not to buy Mitsubishi TV's. Craigs List ad bashing Mitsubishi. If they are not going to stand behind their products let make them the most hated TV manufacture in the world!

Bulb failures
Sep 7, 2009 12:50AM PDT

The solution for the bulb failure problem is to take the bulb housing out every month or as needed and clean the small screen that collects dust as air enters the bulb chamber. The screen gets clogged, preventing air flow and the bulb overheats causing failure. I had a couple of bulbs go bad after around six months each but since doing this the last bulb purchased hasn't failed.
By the way, the lawsuit against Mitsubishi about bulb failure lost.

My only bulb replacement
Oct 17, 2009 4:15AM PDT

I've had my 57" now for three years and had to replace the bulb only once. The instructions I got when replacing the bulb instructed that I remove the screen in the bulb housing all together. This elimates cloging and gives more air circulation around the bulb. Of course, its still a good idea to remove it periodaclly and blow out the housing.

Replacement bulb
Oct 17, 2009 8:03AM PDT

My TV is the Mitsubishi WD-57731. I bought a replacement bulb off ebay ...this was the bulb only..not the housing. I got if from dlplamps.com and he gets it from nesselectronics.com. The instructions specificly states that:

You will need to modify your housing to maintain warranty coverage on your new lamp. Mitsubishi has had problems with lamp life on these because of the small filter design used. You will find a small screen filter on the bottom/back of the housing that needs to be completely removed. Press in on it with a small screwdriver to lossen a corner. With a needle nose pliers grasp the filter screen and pull it out. Discard it and leave the opening as it is.

I then had to take apart the housing. There are three tabs that hold the housing together. Using a 7mm nut driver and a phillips screwdriver I removed the bad bulb. Reversed the process and installed the new bulb. Be carefull not to touch the new bulb with bare hands by using the supplied plastic glove during assembly. I cleaned all part while I had them apart and also blew out the cavity that the housing sits in, inside the TV.

Another point that is very important to lamp life is in the setup menu under Energy Mode, DO NOT use the Fast Power On mode to turn on the TV. If you use this the TV stores up power in the caps to energize the bulb and ballast with a quick jolt when you turn on your set. This fast jolt WILL shorten bulb life and cause more lamp failures. Be patient and just use the Low Power setting. Yes, it will take about a minute for you to get a picture, but your bulb will last alot longer.

Thanks for the info. I was part of the original lawsuit that lost. I repeatadly take the bulb housing out and clean the screen filter-no failed bulbs since I started doing that. Removing the screen altogether is something I thought of but wasn't sure if I should. I hope the extra dust won't hurt the bulb any as there isn't anything stopping it from getting to the bulb.
Thanks again.

There is Help from Mitsubishi, Virgil White
Sep 14, 2009 12:15AM PDT

Dear All that have a Mitsubishi DLP TV,

There is help and I am a witness.
Two months ago I read a post about a service manager in LA, Virgil White at Mitsubishi that was willing to help. I was having problems with my picture with a white line going down the middle and had already spent $700 to fix my TV previously.

I emailed Virgil and he gave me an assignment to make sure it wasn't the cable feed. Then I sent him a copy of my bill of $700 I had paid before, he then agreed to send a independent service person to research the problem. That service person agreed to my challenges and Mitsubishi agreed to pay for ALL PARTS and most of the service bill. They took care of 90% of the expenses. My TV now works just as good as new.

Here is his contact information at Mitsubishi: VWhite at mdea.com

Hope this fixes your problems as well.

All the best,

Marc

Mitsubishi is making good!!
Oct 5, 2009 7:31AM PDT

As the above comments suggest, there are definitely people at Mitsubishi that know these DLP's are bad. I called Mitsubishi early last week and reported another dead lamp. The first adviser as well as the 2nd were unwilling to replace my prematurely dead lamp (this is the 3rd time by the way). I kept asking for the persons supervisor (each calling me back within 24 hours). The third adviser I spoke with was very supportive. He explained that the lamp enclosure has been redesigned and that the new enclosure has bigger holes or spacing in the vent screens. He offered not just to replace my lamp but to also give me a new 9 month factory warranty! He explained the lamp would come Wednesday, which it did, and that the warranty would come in writing a few days later. I received the warranty today. However, I will also add that the lamp and enclosure that I received is identical to the previous. In addition, as with my last lamp replacement, we smell burning plastic/electronics smell. This time, the smell is not going away. In any case, I have a new warranty which specifically offers a "credit towards a new unit if this one should fail" between now and the end of June 2010. I still believe these DLP's should all be replaced by Mitsubishi but am also thankful that there are some Mits employee's trying to make good on there promises and reputation.

I don't have the name of this supervisor, I remember he was the 3rd level up. I'm usually pretty good about documenting these conversations but I think I was so shocked at his reply that I didn't write any of it down. HOWEVER, as an update, I can tell all that I did recieve the lamp in a timely manner (not redesigned as he said) and a few days later received a 9 month warranty.
