Mitsubishi DLP Television WD-57831 Class Action Lawsuit

Jul 25, 2007 11:43AM PDT

Hello,

Is anyone interested in getting in on a class action lawsuit against Mitsubishi and their (known?) defective DLP televisions? I've seen numerous posts regarding lamps, ballast boards, DLP engines, total rebuilds, poorly assembled thermistor sensors, air flow problems, useless repairmen, etc. etc.

I too am experiencing the joy of making 3 Diamond Card payments as well as HD cable programming payments all for a television that stopped working back on June 30, 2007 and has had 2, now a pending 3rd, unsucessful attempts by incompetent "authorized repair centers" to fix it. ITS ONLY 6 MONTHS OLD!!! Randomly replacing parts without performing electronic troubleshooting is totally unacceptable.

Anyway, please let me know if anyone would be willing to sign some papers and get this thing going.

Thanks!

I'm in! Send any info if this lawsuit has started. I have a WD62827 with all the problems everyone else is experiencing. I have a non working tv and mitsubishi refuses to help out because my problems started one month after my 12 month warrenity expired! I don't know about anyone else out there, but who really pays for expensive extended warrenties.

Warranties on certain problems with mitsubishi tv's have been extended by an additional 2 years. So whatever's wrong with your TV and if its the right model # it may have warranty on it.

we have had our 57 inch for about 16 months now. after less than 1 year we had to replace the bulb and i had no idea how much they costed or that i would be spending that every year or less. luckily this one was covered by warranty but not the ones to come. now the problem is that it won't turn on. it just flashes the light above "timer". i kick myself every time i think about how much i spent on this thing that doesn't even work like it should.

Is there a class action suit? If yes how do I get in?
Nov 5, 2008 12:50AM PST

I have a WD-57731. I have had it about 21 months now. I just replaced my second lamp. The worst part was the first lamp going after 13 months and Mitsubishi telling me they were out ofstock and that it would be 3 to 6 weeks for a replacement. It's a great TV when it is working.

Us too!!
Nov 7, 2008 2:04AM PST

In May of 2005 we purchased the mitsubishi 52725 for over 3000.00!
We have had to replace the lamp three times already, the picture has continuely gotten darker and darker to the point that we have to almsot black out the room. Now the light for the power just keeps blinking green. We have tried over and over to reset it and it will not come on. I see in this thread some refer to it as the blinking light of death. This TV sucks, and I wish we never paid that kinda of money for something that will not last . I have a 18 year old Quasar that works brilliantly and two other old tvs that have better pictures and work far better than this piece of crap. If there really is a class action lawsuit I want in!

Just filed a complaint with the BBB

We purchased our 65" TV in December of '06, and have had to replace 2 lamps; both went bad after 11 months. We don't even use our TV during the day, only in the evening. Why didn't Mitsubishi let anyone know of this extended warranty? Even when I called them to complain (and they sent me a new lamp with no questions asked!), no one told me of this.

I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, and included a link to this forum to show them the HUNDREDS of people who are frustrated with this problem! They are continuing to sell a defective product!

Count me in - WD-52725 nothing but problems
Nov 10, 2008 6:48AM PST

I purchased a Mitsubishi WD-52725 in April of 2005 for $3200 and it's been nothing but problems. I've been through three bulbs with minimal hours of usage, intermittent power issues, and now the blinking green light of death. I am now facing 8-10 weeks without a TV after technicians have been trying to figure this problem out for 3 weeks. Some quick Googling reveals multiple issues of similar nature with this model as well as others, yet Mitsubishi denies knowing anything about it and insists on sending my TV in to Georgia for lengthy analysis and expensive repairs. I'm tired of this expensive piece of junk. I will post complaints on BBB, FTC, and anywhere else possible. If anyone has a better solution please post soon!!!! I will gladly join any class action suits in hopes to recover SOMETHING from my original purchase.

Would some attorney grab this and get going?
Nov 12, 2008 8:11AM PST

My 2-yr old Mitsubishi WD-65732 has been in the shop for now its second week after I demanded that Mitsubishi do something about the lamps burning out so damn fast. I've been told they are replacing the ballast and the lamp.

The 8th or 9th Mits representative that I spoke to, one that was in the USA, said that they now have "better lamps" that will last longer. He said they will take my TV to the local authorized repair center and have it thoroughly analyzed.

There is a systemic problem with this model HDTV. 3 lamps in 25 months for a TV that is used in the evenings is just insane. It is just plain and simple, a lemon. Mits customer service representatives are doing more damage for the company than good.

I will never purchase another Mitsubishi product again. Not even if it produced energy instead of used it, destroyed dust instead of attracted it, and made my kids smarter instead of draining their brains.

I usually hate class action lawsuits because the consumer usually gets a crap coupon for "$100 off your next purchase of a Mitsubishi TV" and the Attorneys get rich, but in this case I'm all for some Attorneys taking some money out of Mitsubishi's pockets.

Class Action
Nov 19, 2008 10:57PM PST

I'm not sure, but I want in a class action against Mitsu also. I have a WD-52628 and that television was clearly advertised as having full 1080p capabilities; no where did I see that it was only a 1080i to 1080p upconversion with no true 1080p signals accepted except via IEE 1394. IMO, this was clearly deceptive advertising.

RE: Class Action
Nov 20, 2008 5:35AM PST

The first generation doesn't display a true 1080P picture anyway. It does bopping which is 540x2 which isn't the same thing. And as you pointed out the only way to hook a blu ray up would be through the IEE 1394 port which you can't do unless you have a computer with a blu ray player in it and then hook that up to the TV which is BS.

This is just one of many problems from these tv's. The FTC should sue them as mits has tons of problems and their screwing the consumers over and no Law firm is filing a federal case against them which means if you're not in California then you're screwed or you have to file one yourself which means spending more money on the cost of just replacing the POS mits. And if you do file one then you have to hope that the judge gives you back your attorney fees if you win. Mits is playing the role well when it comes to screwing over their customers. I for one will NEVER purchase any product made by them again.

Class Action
Nov 20, 2008 5:50AM PST

Just wanted to comment on your second paragraph. MIT has screwed alot of people and I was one of them. I am in Texas - I did not go to a private attorney - there was no Class Action suit in Texas for me to join SO, I harrassed the H*LL out of MIT until they replaced my set with a new 60inch WD-60735 - did not have to pay a dime - I did invest time though. They delivered it 2 weeks ago along with the stand and it is a beautiful unit. It took nearly 90 days to get results - but I got results. My suggestion to all is to file a complaint with the FTC (Federal Trade Commission and keep on MIT. This paid off for me and I would recommend to all that there can be a light at the end of the tunnel and it is not always a TRAIN! You get out of it what you put into it! It was worth my time.

I filed a complaint with FTC, but I haven't had any luck in getting anyone with half a brain at Mitsubishi. Their customer service # is a joke! Does anyone have a better phone # for complaining to Mitsubishi?
Also checked with mills law firm in CA, their Class Action in only for the lamp problems (guess I've been lucky with my lamp). Their class action has nothing to do with the deceptive 1080P advertising.
Does anyone know of a law firm that is pursuing the 1080P issue?

If that's all they got from my brief view of it then they got screwed. $180 checks down to $90 checks. Mits first generation tv's costs thousands more, because of the 1080p cutting edge technology that they were suposed to have.

That class action was against Sony Electronics for the exact same 1080p marketing deception.
I finally found out that Mills Law Firm in San Rafael, CA (TEL: 415-455-1326) is handling the "service issues" class action against Mitsubishi.
The "1080p marketing deception" class action is being handled by Kabateck, Brown & Kellner Law Firm in Las Angeles, CA (Tel: 213-217-5000). Hope these have a better pay out than the Sony settlement!

need some advice
Dec 8, 2008 10:07PM PST

I see in your post that you harassed MITS until you got a new set. I can't get anywhere with them. When did you buy your set? My 52725 purchased in April 2005 now needs a Digital Board and an Analog Board. To the tune of $1100. I've already replaced the lamp twice. Repairman told me that the bulbs are good for 3000-5000 hours but if you make the picture bright then it will burn out quicker. Of course most people want the nicest picture possible so the brightness is near the maximum.

I am so disappointed that my beautiful TV was a waste of money. It got such great reviews in CNET and COnsumer Reposts. The picture now is almost unwatchable, getting steadily worse. How did you get them to replace your TV? I am even willing to pay for the labor if they will replace the part. You also said you emailed them, can you give me the address? I have filed with the FTC already.

Advice
Dec 8, 2008 11:39PM PST

This is the e-mail address I used that is to be directed to Irvine, CA mdeaservice@mdea.com. Not sure if it was my tone or what - I never agreed to pay for anything. I guess I kept saying this is "unacceptable" and that they knew they created an inferior product and waited to see what would happen instead of being a quality Company and recalling the units produced during that timeframe. Our set was bought in November 2004 and we have two other sets that were purchased in 1988 and 1990 that are still working and never had one repair so I was pretty upset when this happenend and the price we paid. I agree - my set was beautiful and I decided upon it based on the room size etc.. - yes, I was pretty broken hearted - felt defeated and then came rageing back. I was not going to take NO for an answer. I guess I was like a dog with a bone and the more I thought about it and the lack of interest on their part, the madder I got. Just keep on Keepin On - do not let them WIN! It will pay off in the end! Keep me updated

Mits is agreeing to pay to replace the part---the circuit boards---but not the labor, which will cost me $550. I told them that I filed a complaint with the FTC and they are still not budging on this. I have only been doing this a week but I don't know if I can continue this for months until they give in.

I wondered if you would email me at ptholland75@yahoo.com

There's some questions I would like to ask you?
Thanks

Hello ptholland, I have owned our piece of crap for 3-4yrs. On Dec.12th, this is what happened: The screen was viewing ok, then the
entire screen went into a bright green color and then out completely.
The green timer light starting flashing and a loud humming sound from
the back of the tv, near the lamp. Shut it down for a while and then
back on. The loud humming sound continued and then a solid red lamp
light showed up. I pulled the lamp out, but was not burned out. This current bulb is less then 6months old. This is the second bulb change. Our tv is model# 52725. I have not contacted the retailer yet or Mitsubishi. Any contact numbers or people I should call?

Thanks, Al in Mich.

52725 problems
Dec 16, 2008 9:46PM PST

Hi Al,
The phone number is 1-800-332-2119 for Mits Customer Service. They will take your complaint and issue you a reference number. In my case, I had already had a Mits Authorized Service shop come out to give me an estimate. I had to fax the estimate to them for their review. My TV is having a different problem than yours---mine is circuit boards---and so far they have agreed to pay for the part but not the labor which is $550. This is not good enough, so I am continuing to call but no luck so far. They have an email which is mdeaservice@mdea.com. You can also file a complaint with the FTC at FTC.gov.
