Mitsubishi DLP Television WD-57831 Class Action Lawsuit

Jul 25, 2007 11:43AM PDT

Hello,

Is anyone interested in getting in on a class action lawsuit against Mitsubishi and their (known?) defective DLP televisions? I've seen numerous posts regarding lamps, ballast boards, DLP engines, total rebuilds, poorly assembled thermistor sensors, air flow problems, useless repairmen, etc. etc.

I too am experiencing the joy of making 3 Diamond Card payments as well as HD cable programming payments all for a television that stopped working back on June 30, 2007 and has had 2, now a pending 3rd, unsucessful attempts by incompetent "authorized repair centers" to fix it. ITS ONLY 6 MONTHS OLD!!! Randomly replacing parts without performing electronic troubleshooting is totally unacceptable.

Anyway, please let me know if anyone would be willing to sign some papers and get this thing going.

Thanks!

There are currently 2 class action lawsuits in California. If you're not a resident of California then it doesn't do anyone any good. We need someone to file a federal class action lawsuit against them.

crappy tv...crappy service!..
Jun 25, 2008 3:02PM PDT

Let start from the top...

First all, I bought my 65 inch Mitsubishi TV from Best Buy, and if anyone has ever delt with them....enough said. We made sure we asked about how long the tv would last because we knew the flat screens only lasted a certain amount of hours. We opted for this module because the representative insured us that we wouldnt have to replaced a lamp on it for a minimum of 4 years even if we did watch lots of tv or played video games (which we don't).We bought our TV right before we moved into our house on 3/31/07 and it sat in an empty house for two weeks before we officially moved in. We're not the kind of people that watch tv all the time because were at work or sleeping most of our day.

Our tv went out on 6/15/08,1 year,2months and 15 days after purchase. We went back to Best Buy who told us to call a 800 number who then said their computers were down and they would call back in 24 hours and then we coud try and set up an appointment. 4 days later they said they had to wait another 4days to send someone out. I called Best buy back and told them our problem. I told them we had our tv for a little over a year and there was no reason why we had to be replacing anything on our tv especially since we dont watch it that often. He told me that even if we didnt watch it that oftenwe have to replace it every 3000 hours or every year 1/2 or so. He also gave me a crap about because we have it plugged directly into the wall our tv will go out sooner. I say this is CRAP! If we would have known we needed to replace it that soon and that often and spend more money then we paid for it we definetly wouldnt have bought it. I 've been lucky to just know begin my journey through tv problem hell but I sure as wont stand around and take it! I want a diffrent brand tv ASAP! PLEASE LET ME KNOW INFO ABOUT THIS LAWSIUIT AND RECALL OF THESE CRAP CRAPPY TV'S.

Blooming Problems Etc. Here - Illinois
Jun 27, 2008 3:09AM PDT

WD-65831 Model

I purchased June of 2007

I have had it repaired twice already for blooming, and I have had one lightbulb replaced. I'm unsure if the engine has been fixed everytime, or what...but I have had the tv back for about 1.5 months, and it's blooming AGAIN!!!

I am 6 days out of my warranty, and called Mitsubishi. They acted ignorant of blooming, and what it meant. I explained. They had me restart the tv, and then they ended w/ me unplugging it for 20 minutes. I was told if it didn't work, to call them back. They said they'd pay for technician to diagnose and estimate the costs. The problem is that I'm going to likely experience the same problem I have been.

I just got here on the thread...not sure about class action suit, but I'm up for one myself. Clearly there is an issue on their TV's. So sign me up. Let me know what information is needed.

Hmm... How does this suggestion sound?
Jun 28, 2008 12:17AM PDT

For what it's worth, I'm even wondering if a more reliable backlight, like LED from Samsung would be a solution. I mean, their DLPs seem to be a little better, from my standpoint. I've thought about a Mitsubishi, but after hearing this, I'm probably pretty much afraid of owning a traditionally backlit RPTV. For now, I'm wondering if LED backlight technology would be any better in the long haul.

mitsubishi cooling issue
Jul 2, 2008 2:25AM PDT

To Whom It May Concern,

After battling this "shutdown due to airflow" error for months, I was online searching for this cooling issue with my Mitsubishi DLP Television WD-52631, and I came accross this thread. I have been using a little box fan next to the exhaust vent to help draw more air out. I cant believe i haven't found out about this earlier. I totally should have purchased the extended circuit city warranty when I bought this thing in december of 2006, I but I figured mitsubishi was a solid product.

I guess this is a common issue with all of Mitsubishi's Big Screen, and if there is a Class Action Lawsuit, I would like to be a part of it. Please send required paperwork to spoolin77@comcast.net

Thanks,
Roy Johnson

Lamp issue
Jul 16, 2008 1:07AM PDT

I have a WD-57731 that has had the sensor changed after 2 months use and with about 2920 on the lamp--it burned out. Replaced it and it lasted 2 days. All the while it was in there it filled our house with a "hot plastic" smell. Now that I've replaced the lamp again, I took a page out of the x-box 360 cooling and placed a small 5" fan next to the fan exhaust. No problems yet. Shouldn't have to do that in this day and age. Thanks.

Our WD-52525 is 2 months shy of 4 years old and we were just told the digital module has gone out. This is the third repair we have had to do on this tv, but by far the most expensive. Is there a class action lawsuit going?

Mitsuibishi Problem
Jul 14, 2008 2:33AM PDT

It is my understanding that they are doing nothing. They have extended the warranty on the heat sensor to 3 years, but the heat sensor is the direct cause of the failure of the lamp that they make you buy. I have had a MGA televisions since 1971. Its one thing to have a problem and I can live with that, but its quite another thing for Mitsubishi to blow every one off. This needs to be addressed.

Mitsubishi DLP Television WD-52525 Class Action Lawsuit
Jul 21, 2008 3:39AM PDT

I see that your model is a different number then mine however I am experiencing the exact same problems and frustrations as you. The set has been gone over two months now and I don't even know where it was taken to. Please count me in on any class action law suit that may come about. In the mean time I'm going to call the company who handles my extended warranty and ask them if they have information available on a class action law suit against Mitsubishi DLPs and if so I'd like to have the contact info so I can sign up. It may be only a small thorn in their side but if more people start harassing them maybe something will come out of it. As it is now we are going to go out and purchase another television for out living room and not another DLP.

Mitsubishi DLP --WD52525 Class Action Suit
Sep 27, 2009 7:23AM PDT

I also purchased this piece of expensive junk. I have had to replace the lamp cartridge twice and bare the expense of the labor even with the extended warranty purchased from Best Buy. It took them over 3 weeks to even get someone to come out. If there is an action suit please let me know . I would be more than happy to be involved. I think that research of these units by service and warranty records of both Mitsubishi and their distributors , we would all find that even after all the field problems were coming in they still continued to sell the sets as top of the line. I have constantly beat myself , considering the TV's at Wal-Mart are more reliable and actually have more support than these so called "Top Of The Line" junkers.

Replacing Mits DLP Bulbs
Sep 27, 2009 7:48AM PDT

Replacing the bulb as opposed to the entire lamp assembly is a cost saving option. However, I just did it and found that the plastic clips on the outside of the housing are extremely brittle due to extended periods of heat...mine broke.

Mitsubishi Lawsuit
Jul 27, 2008 5:50AM PDT

Yes, I am ready to sign papers and get a class action lawsuit going.

We purchased the WD 62628 model one year and one month ago. Right after the warranty expired, our tv picture and sound went out. We purchased a new lamp for a few hundred dollars but that didn't fix the problem. We are about to spend another few hundred purchasing a Ballast. This was not a cheap TV nor are the replacement parts.

We didn't know when we bought it that so many consumers were having problems with Mitsubishi TV's. I should ahve read the blogs first!

Anyone, please contact me if there is news on a lawsuit. I live in Texas.

Thank you.

You can contact the mills law firm in California, because the more complaints that they have the more evidence they have to move forward against Mitsubishi. Then hopefully someone will pick up a federal one against them.

More Problems with WD57831
Jul 30, 2008 3:06AM PDT

Well got my Mitsubishi television fixed and they stuck me for $220 for the lamp. Brought it home, and within three weeks its starting to shut down constantly. Shuts down after 5 minutes of watching television so they cannot blame that on the heat! This is way out of hand and needs to be addressed.

Bigger problems that you even know
Jul 30, 2008 5:31PM PDT

I have owned a 62725 for 3-years and owned mits tv's for 24 years. Never had a problem until now...and it is a bad one.

If you own my tv or around the same model, the capacitors on the power supply and every board in the set are faulty, and are bulging(rated for 10v and needs 16v). If you fix the DM you might as well just pull everything else out and replace it as well. Mits has been mostly doing a chassis swap because it is just not repairable. Bad engineering. I am fortunate that I work for a major electronic company and know the local rep that is handling this for me, and is trying to get it replaced.

Unfortunately mits has lost my confidence and I just bought a 50' LG plasma and a 32" LCD today and when the 62 is replaced or fixed, all 5 of my mits televisions are out. I told 800-no help that I was going to make it my mission in life to let every customer that I come across, know how bad Mits is.

Also, Just buy and replaace the bulb only, then pull the paper and screen out of the housing and replace it. I did this after my first bulb burned out after 1 year and my second bulb lasted 2.5 years

Forgot....I'm in if it goes to class action.

paper in housing
Jul 31, 2008 12:46AM PDT

There is a piece of laminated waxed and perfed paper that you have to remove to replace the bulb(at least in the 62725). When you remoce the two screws to take out the bulb, it is wrapped from behind in this wax type paper and there is a this piece of screen that is like mosquito screen on the top of the housing to help keep the dust out. I tried to replace the paper and it just did not fit right so I yanked it out and put it all back together, cleaning the bulb with 91% alcohol and it lasted me almost 2.5 years. Don't know how scientific this is but it worked for me. Also just buying the bulb only is around $140.00 shipped 2nd day. Mits charges around $100.00 extra just for the housing. If you have an extra housing buy the extra bulb, replace and place it in a plastic bag for when the next one goes out.

Mitsubishi doesn't care either as their 800# people don't know what they are talking about and are based in the Philippines. If you get someone from the Irvine location to call you they don't care either. Their answer is that they don't believe that the current lawsuits are going to go anywhere and you can sue them if you want too.
