Mitsubishi DLP Television WD-57831 Class Action Lawsuit

Jul 25, 2007 11:43AM PDT

Hello,

Is anyone interested in getting in on a class action lawsuit against Mitsubishi and their (known?) defective DLP televisions? I've seen numerous posts regarding lamps, ballast boards, DLP engines, total rebuilds, poorly assembled thermistor sensors, air flow problems, useless repairmen, etc. etc.

I too am experiencing the joy of making 3 Diamond Card payments as well as HD cable programming payments all for a television that stopped working back on June 30, 2007 and has had 2, now a pending 3rd, unsucessful attempts by incompetent "authorized repair centers" to fix it. ITS ONLY 6 MONTHS OLD!!! Randomly replacing parts without performing electronic troubleshooting is totally unacceptable.

Anyway, please let me know if anyone would be willing to sign some papers and get this thing going.

Thanks!

I heard from Mitsubishi Consumer Relations today. They are offering to pay $595.00 towards fixing out T.V.- that's half of the projected cost, but with everything I am hearing I don't believe that will fix the problem. I told Mitsubishi that I was filing a complaint with the BBB and followed your instructions - Thanks for the info! I also told them a $4,000.00 T.V. should last more than 2 1/2 years and we will accept nothing other than a replacement set. I'll let you know what happens when I get a response to the BBB complaint. Thanks again.

That's great!

However ... if you haven't already, be sure you also put everything in writing to Mits Consumer Relations ... their e-mail address is: mdeaservice@mdea.com. Don't let them get away with offering you a paltry $600 ... demand you get a replacement AT LEAST comparable to your original model. I suggest you also look online @ the Mits website to find out the model numbers of the latest tv's that just came out in April, 2008. I ended up getting the WD-60735 but they came out with about 7-8 new models in April. Hopefully they've worked some of the problems out in these newer models. One thing I already noticed, there isn't a fan running continually like there was in the earlier models. Just check out the website at www.mitsubishi-tv.com. Best of luck to you ... hang in there!

Was it someone from the California location that called you? Or was it from the Philippines?

New Request started yesterday
Jun 25, 2008 1:02AM PDT

Model: WD-62625
Paid: $3000 in Feb. 2005
Lamp and Ballst replaced in November 2007
NEW IN JUNE 2008 - PICTURE HAS GONE OUT AND AND NOTHING CAN BE SEEN BUT PURPLEISH/PINK, FUZZY SCREEN WITH WAVES.

I'm taking "gohorns1" advice and calling Mits.

I explained my situatioin and told them about past repairs. They have requested the following from me before they can decide on any financial assistance:
1. Proof of Purchase
2. Prior repair records from "authorized" repair center.
3. Current diagnosis and estimate (on my dime, they wouldn't help with this cost).

Note: I am out of the extended warranty period, so I figured I'd be paying some sort of out of pocket expense. But not after only 3 years of owning and 7 months after a major repair and lamp replacement.

Don't mean to be pessimistic, but I mentioned the desire to get a new replacement an the rep said they don't do that.

I will update when I have contacted them again. I still plan to write an email to their email address and file a BBB complaint.

Mitsubishi Lamp Issue
Jun 9, 2008 3:35AM PDT

Sure add me to the class action suite. I purchased a WD-57731 in July 2007 and have just ordered my second lamp. I was told at the time of purchase that the lamps would last a year. I could live with that but not twice a year. At the prices of TV's today you could by several TV's in a short amount of time instead of replacing lamps.

ME TOO!
Jun 9, 2008 2:50PM PDT

I bought a WD-52725 in 2006 and shortly afterward began having trouble with the "Your TV will shutdown in a few seconds..." message. It would come and go intermittently but still very frequently. I was confused at first because there has always been plenty of air flow around the set, I also cleaned the filter as instructed. Now the TV doesn't work AT ALL. The only thing that appears on the screen is a black and white checkered pattern. I can't even see the NetCommand menu! I was told by a repair guy that a board of some sort would need to be replaced and that it is very expensive. I don't get it! The TV is still practically new!! I hardly use it anyways (less that 10 a week on average.) I wish I had started doing some research on the air flow issue earlier! I would be more than willing to sign up for a class action lawsuit about these TVs. I feel cheated. This TV wasn't cheap! and I expected not to need to buy a new one for a while. I will be contacting Mitsubishi tomorrow morning and start getting some answers for.

Problems with WD62825 - Count me in if there is a lawsuit
Jun 20, 2008 3:38AM PDT

I bought a WD62825 in late 2004 and had problems with air-flow and shutdown by itself in early 2005. Lamp was replaced but never fixed the problems. It wasn't the lamp problems. I tried unplug and reset and worked for a few times. Now this TV is totally dead and only timer still brinking the green light. I called consumer relations and faxed in all documents. I finally got to talk to someone in "Irvine". It seems like I ain't going to get any thing from Mit since it is out of warranty. I totally believe what I have is a defective or lemon TV.

My WD-62825 is bought 10/22/05 is having the same problems and now it will not turn on. After reading all this information I too would like to be part of this law suite. I am contacting customer relations, and will write mdeaservice@mdea.com also. Companies need to stay by their products or they need to just go out of business.

I would not recommend Mitsubishi to anyone.

Aug 22, 2008 4:41AM PDT

I finally got a chance to call mitsubishi. I have been on the phone for 2 hours and now they put me on hold. I spoke to Vigil White in complaint department and what a waste of time. He claimed that he's a complaint specialist, but he didn't help me at all. He said that I need to contact the service department to get my TV fixed when he knows damn well that the TV cannot be fixed. He needs to change his title to delegator specialist, because he doesn't want to take the responsibility of mitsubishi manufacturing bad quality TVs.

Anyone heard about the lawsuit? Has it gone anywhere with it? I would like to get included if possible.

No, I didn't get a replacement. But Mit is paying for the labor and parts. Will see if they fix the problem? I was told TV will be upgraded and will work better and I also will get a 6 months warranty. Will get the TV back in couple weeks and we will see from there.

I purchased the tv May 2006 from Aarons 2925 South General Bruce Drive, Temple, TX 76502 phone #(254) 774-9995 and by Aug 2006 I was getting the dreaded air sensor flow message. After a couple of weeks of turning the set off to resolve I proceeded to purchase an external fan to help keep the set cool. After doing research online, I saw many others had this problem and that it was being fixed under warranty. I contacted Aarons as I was still making payments on the tv at the time and they had an authorized service tech from JOHNNY OWENS - INCORPORATED 2904 TRIMMIER ROAD, NUMBER C KILLEEN TX 76542 phone #(254) 526-3054 come out about June 2007. Paid tv off in February 08 with tax returns about 6 months early and 1 month later lamp light goes on and I research and see many others have also had this problem. Well, unfortunately I'm not rich, i.e, the rent-to-own method. Are you kidding me, over $3000 spent on a tv and nobody told me I would have to replace a $300.00 bulb on a yearly basis for maintenance. So now I have a black box that has been collecting dust for the last 4 months because bulb prices with no guarantee on lifetime is absurd, not to mention I'm sure there will be more problems to follow. Please add me to the list for the class action lawsuit or contact me. By the way, I emailed MDEA and BBB June 6,2008 and no response as of yet.

Update
Jun 11, 2008 3:12AM PDT

Called Mitsubishi customer service yesterday, yeah the overseas location. Offered me a lamp at a discounted price of get this an amazing drop from $249.00 down to $200.00. Wow. Thats how much my $3000-$4000 purchase meant to them. Got an email this morning from MDEA saying someone will contact me within 2 days. Will keep you posted but don't hold your breath.

Update 2
Jun 13, 2008 10:49AM PDT

Ok, I never got a call back so I decided to call Mitsubishi this morning. Complained about not receiving a call back, asked if rep couldnt get me a new bulb sent that she would need to put someone on the phone who could and they offered to replace my bulb if I sent in the Purchase receipt. I'll keep you updated on if it actually is the bulb and any future problems. Good luck fellow Americans.

Replacement Lamp
Jun 26, 2008 7:53AM PDT

I just called Mits myself about my second lamp going out. They offered to send me one if I sent in a copy of my receipt. I have done that and I am now told that I should have my new lamp in 2 business days. That should be Monday or Tuesday at the latest. I am very surprised to be going through 2 lamps and I have only had my TV since November 25, 2006. I have a WD-57731. Why don't they replace the lamps with LED's??? That seems like it would solve Mits' headache and ours also.

Just posted the previous entry and I was curious to know where this the rest of the people in these posts stand? I mean this thread has been open for almost a year. What is the status of lawsuit ie., (First person to post thread). Has any progress been made or are we just wasting time venting here? We the people, for the people, by the people? Anyone?

How I stand
Jun 10, 2008 5:39AM PDT

I still have not heard back from the BBB, while I did get an email back from Mitsu. They told me to call the service line. I will wait until I get a response from the BBB. I think it is absurd to have to resplace a bulb every 10 months just to watch TV. I spent 3000 on my unit also. Mitsubishi has to do something to fix this problem. I requested a replacement of my television with a newer model as I don't trust the model I have.

My recommendation ....
Jun 10, 2008 6:58AM PDT

Go ahead and call Mits Consumer Relations (800-332-2119) if you haven't already. The call center is located in the Phillippines but go ahead and verbally confirm/document everything w/ them. You should eventually get a call back from Mits in Irvine, California. If you don't, you can find their ph. # on the BBB website. The contact name there is Vigil White I believe. This will make sure you have all bases covered .... e-mail to MDEA, BBB complaint and verbal complaint to Mits Consumer Relations. Demand a newer model replacement of comparable value to your existing tv. My original model was a WD-52725 and I ended up w/ a WD-60735 PLUS the Mits entertainment center that goes with it! The newest DLP models can be found @ www.mitsubishi-tv.com Be persistent .... best of luck to you!

question
Jul 11, 2008 7:34AM PDT

Hey gohorns...how old was your tv that got replaced? From what you know does it appear to be a requirement to drop tons of dough on repairs to get a financial assistance on repairs or a replacement set from Mits?? I had my TV for several years but I think it just crapped the bed recently. I had many of the symptoms described here.....I had the blinking green light that was messing with my ability to turn on the TV (had to unplug, reboot..etc to get it to turn on), I thought my bulb failed so I replaced the bulb without success- I am thinking I have a ballast/power issue after reading everything here.

Thankfully I found this string....this stopped me from trying to get repair folks and expensive parts in the mix. I am not sure if I have a shot at getting a replacement TV given that my problems are relatively new but I dont want to spend the money to find out just how screwed my TV is, I'd rather cut my losses and use that repair money to invest in a more stable TV. But, when you drop 3gs on a TV you have a hard time letting go!!!

In answer to your question ....
Jul 11, 2008 8:50AM PDT

My tv was 3 years old (WD-52725) when I started having major problems (thermal sensor, DM Module - went out 3 time), etc. I bought the original TV in Jan., 2005 from the Home Theatre Store .... paid $3200 (plus the ext. warranty). My advice? BE RELENTLESS! Plead your case w/ Mits by phone and e-mail and also file an online complaint w/ Irvine, California BBB. If you need any of that information, feel free to write me here. I ended up getting a replacement TV (bigger, newer model - WD-60735 - came out in April, 200Cool plus the matching Mits base/entertainment center. Let me know if you have anymore questions .... GOOD LUCK TO YOU!

Jul 17, 2008 2:09AM PDT

Sorry to inform you that by unplug, reboot isn't going to work long.. I was doing the same to mine WD62825, paid more than 4g, for a few times and now it is completely shut down. You should report your tv problems to BBB online soon.

LCD/DLP Projection TV problems
Jul 17, 2008 11:20AM PDT

ALL LCD/DLP Projo TV's share many of these same problems. The lamps are hi intensity mercury vapor and run very hot. Cooling fans are used to cool lamps and light engines. This pulls dust into the system. Most Mitsubishi sets have external filters on back that MUST be cleaned periodically. Many others dont have accessible filters. I have seen lite engine failure in as little as 6 months(customer had African Gray Parrot... bird dander thru out TV!)to 3 years or so at best. Keeping the air vents as clean as poosible will slow the problem, but not eliminate it. Repair cost vary any where from about $1100 to $2500 depending on make and model.

I have heard of LED based backlight projection sets, but have not seen any. Otherwise, flat panel sets are a far better bet. Repair costs on them are high also, but no lamp or dust issues.

For what it is worth!!

Hello Gohorns...few questions
Aug 31, 2008 11:24PM PDT

OK I am one of the unfortunate Mits WD-62525 owners.....having replaced my lamp 3 times (in 2 years)!! On top of the original $3,000.00 I spent on the unit in the first place, I am ready to use this thing for target practice!!
...OK ... I have called Consumer Relations and they are giving me the run around. I faxed them my receipt last week, I have since called them and they "never received" the sales slip. Now as my luck would have it, I can't find the sales slip. Did they "demand" the receipt? I might be able to have my credit card company go back three years to get my transaction, but not sure if this was acceptable?
I really hope these ******** @ Mitsubishi get back 2 me soon, cuz I currently have no TV!
