Mitsubishi DLP Television WD-57831 Class Action Lawsuit

Jul 25, 2007 11:43AM PDT

Hello,

Is anyone interested in getting in on a class action lawsuit against Mitsubishi and their (known?) defective DLP televisions? I've seen numerous posts regarding lamps, ballast boards, DLP engines, total rebuilds, poorly assembled thermistor sensors, air flow problems, useless repairmen, etc. etc.

I too am experiencing the joy of making 3 Diamond Card payments as well as HD cable programming payments all for a television that stopped working back on June 30, 2007 and has had 2, now a pending 3rd, unsucessful attempts by incompetent "authorized repair centers" to fix it. ITS ONLY 6 MONTHS OLD!!! Randomly replacing parts without performing electronic troubleshooting is totally unacceptable.

Anyway, please let me know if anyone would be willing to sign some papers and get this thing going.

Thanks!

the thermal sensor. I had the WD-52725 ... thermal sensor had to be replaced because it was malfunctioning and causing the bulbs to blow. Mits is aware of the defect in this part. Suggest you call Consumer Relations @ 800-332-2119 and tell them the history behind your problems and also document it in writing to mdeaservice@mdea.com. That way you will have back-up that you have notified them. Also, it will be helpful for you to file a complaint w/ the BBB (you will find MDEA listed ... headquarters is in Irvine, California). You can do this online. I found that after doing all this, they finally responded and agreed to replace my TV. I did have an extended warranty but Mits jumped into the fray and said they would replace the TV. I'm sorry to tell you that this is only the beginning of your problems. Unreal, isn't it?

Thanks for the response ....don't think the bulb actually blew as it looks like the filament is still intact - I have the repair agency responsible for the warranty coming out to take a look - then I guess we go from there.....had a Mitsu tube tv that lasted forever, so I thought this would be a good buy ....maybe not!!

My WD52725 (almost 3 years old) with the intermittant shut down was diagnosed to require $1900 repair. I faxed my information to mitsubishi. I will also send an email and contact BBB. I 'll let you know what happens.

Do you have an extended warranty? If so mitsubishi should replace the TV if the cost to repair it is more than the cost of the TV or for a replacement.

Please do!

Let me know what develops. If you stick with it, you should get a replacement TV. Best of luck to you. (*If/when the opportunity comes up for you to get a replacement, try to get a 2008 model ... hopefully the bugs will be worked out of that one. I am getting the 60735 which came out in April, 2008.

I too, have this tv set. One and a half years after purchase, tv began to overheat, then the 1st bulb went, and now the set is starting to get the blinking green self time light. I looked in the manual about this and could not find what the problem is? Can anyone enlighten me? I am fed up w/ this tv, thought I got a great deal when I purchased it from a family owned tv shop $3k for tv and that was delivered, set up, hooked to system and cables included. CC and BB couldn't touch that price. If there is a lawsuit pending I would like to be included.

Hate to tell you ....

The blinking green timer light means your chassis is going/has gone out. Another known defect in these DLP models. I went through THREE chassis and on the last failure, I told the ext. warranty folks I would not accept anything but a new TV. That process is in the works right now. If you don't have an ext. warranty, I suggest you phone Mits Consumer Relations @ 1-800-332-2119 and verbally tell them all your problems and ask what they will do about it. In addition, put every detail in writing and e-mail it to mdeaservice@mdea.com. Also, would be beneficial for you to file a complaint w/ the BBB (you can do this online ... you will file under the BBB in Irvine, California where Mits headquarters is located). Look for the MDEA company listing on the BBB website (stands for Mitsubishi Digital Electronics America) and file there. The more you have things documented, the better it will be for you. Demand a replacement TV whether you have an ext. warranty or not. This is just the beginning of the problems you will suffer with this TV. Best of luck to you and if you have any questions, feel free to ask here ....

Is there a class action suit goin up yet?
Jun 6, 2008 2:57AM PDT

I have a 57" Mitsubishi DLP that just died for the second time. Getting the red lamp light again less than a year after replacement of the first bulb which lasted less than a year. I haven't called Mitsubishi to complain yet, but I HAVE sent an email. I think I will be calling this weekend and complaining. I think I will also look into buying another TV, Most definately not a Mitsubishi again as my faith in them has been lost.

File an online complaint w/ the BBB against MDEA also (you will file w/ the BBB in Irvine, California ... you'll find it online). If you already sent the e-mail to mdeaservice@mdea.com and you follow-up w/ a complaint to the BBB, you will eventually get a replacement TV. Mine is arriving today in approximately 2 hours. I am getting the WD-60735 (April, 2008 model). I told them I would accept nothing less since I didn't trust any of the older models. (Of course who knows if these new ones are any better?) I still plan to purchase an ext. warranty for the replacement tv since I don't trust Mits at all anymore. Good luck to you .... hope you get results!!

Filing complaints with MDEA and the BBB
Oct 16, 2008 3:48AM PDT

Thanks for your advice. We're experiencing the same problems with our TV (52"), and have started the complaint process. Out of curiosity, how long did you have to deal with them and what kinds of hassle did they give you before they agreed to give you a new TV. Any pointers on how to deal with MDEA and the BBB would be much appreciated! Thanks so much for posting your idea and the results of your work online!

Mitts TV
Oct 16, 2008 4:44AM PDT

OK lets see were to a begin. We purchased the extended warranty from GE Warranty. We had to call them and log the complaint they then turned around and called a TV company to come to our house to fix our TV. The TV company could not figure out the problem they started taking parts and replacing them with no fix to the problem we thought it worked then a week later it would shut down again. After two times of calling the TV company fixed it (I made the mistake of calling the TV company back to tell them it was doing the same thing shutting down again each time). They came back out and took some parts and away the went. 3 weeks went buy and still no tv i called GE Warranty, I said they have fixed the part 3 times and still it does not work, they said well we only have an order of you fixing it once. So MISTAKE NUMBER ONE if they fix your TV and it does not work dont call the TV company back first make the call to your warranty company and let them know it is broken again. Keep lots and lots of notes of who you talked to between the TV company and your warranty company. Write down dates and times and what is wrong with the tv. When the TV repair man comes to your house make sure he puts in writing on the receipt he gives you what part is broken. They replaced my chasise three times. After calling and calling GE warranty and 5 months without a TV I said i want to file for a replacement request. Our contract states if you keep a part for over 90 days they will replace it, there is also a lemon law that if they fix the same part 3 times and it still does not work they have to replace it. Be prepared for a long battle and going without the TV for a long time. Ours paid off GE finally approved a replacement TV they said they cant give us a 52 inch anymore since they don't make them but they gave us a choice of getting a 61 inch Mitts or a 61 inch Samsung. We took the Samsung won't ever go with another Mitts. We thought we would get a store credit from HH Gregg but GE said they will replace the TV with comparable options which upset me at first since we paid $4,000 on the TV and the new TV only cost $1500 but after doing some research and realizing the TV prices dropped so much and the TV we were offered was much better then what we originally had we went with it. We did purchase another warranty (not threw GE they were so rude and difficult to work with). So far we are very very happy with our Samsung. If you have any more questions feel free to email me I will be happy to help. tteetz@gmail.com

Green flashing light
May 31, 2008 11:02AM PDT

The tv shuts off and the light starts flashing. The only way I can remedy the problem is by unplugging and let it sit for a few minutes. That works for me. I have also been noticing the picture will periodically get a break in it and the break moves from right to left.

Re: Extended Warranty
May 31, 2008 4:03PM PDT

killerdc,

IMO the reason mitsubishi charges different amounts based on the serial number is, because they know which models that they are having troubles with. Pretty crappy IMO, but what else can you expect from them.

Killerdc .... when you get the chance, will you post here the $$ amount for the Warrantech ext. warranty? I'd also like to know, were they responsive to your problems with the original TV or was it a big hassle to get the tv repaired? Just trying to find out what I can now since I know I'll need some form of ext. warranty with these dang tvs ....

Warrantech no good
Jun 2, 2008 1:08AM PDT

I called Warrantech and was told they NO longer offer extended warranties on DLP televisions. HMMM. Imagine that. They had to be losing a ton of money. Hell I know they lost a couple thousand on my deal. Happy

I am going to call around to some other places.
Here are the exact prices I was quoted from Mitsu though:

1yr. 145-160
2yr. 280-302
3yr. 458-478

Jun 2, 2008 6:51AM PDT

Doesn't surprise me that Warrantech is getting out of the Mits DLP ext. warranty business. I'm sure more companies will follow. Thanks so much for sharing the pricing you got from Mits with me. Looks like I'll be following your lead and going with the one year ext. warranty (if I end up using Mits). Would appreciate you letting me know if you find any other ext. warranties that sound like good ones. Also, I hope you don't think I'm weird for asking, but would you mind sharing your e-mail address w/ me? I have some info I want to pass on to you but am reluctant to do so here in this forum. You will not believe what I have to tell you about my replacement TV. You can e-mail me at vickigalloway2004@yahoo.com ... look forward to hearing from you ...

Oh I fully believe that as well. Although, this TV was only released a month ago, I hardly think they know which serial #'s are giving problems as of yet, but who knows. I will know more tomorrow when the TV gets here and I call to see which side of the scale I am on. HAHA.

The following seller on ebay suposedly has a fix for this problem. I've seen him charge anywhere from $25 to $40 for the instructions on how to do it. The seller says that it will cost $900 for a repair shopt to fix it and says its an easy fix. Might be worth looking into.

Count me in. I have had a Mitsubishi WD-52825 for 2 1/2 years. The lamp went out, then the Timer light started blinking and the TV stopped working. I just paid $900 to fix, Mitsubishi promised he replacement circuit in 2 weeks. It has now been 5 weeks, and they are saying 2 more weeks. This TV is a joke.

Jun 6, 2008 12:25PM PDT

Those of you who read my previous comments; here is the update:
My unwarrantied. less than 3 year old DPL unit, will cost $1904.60 to repair. I called Mit. customer service and the BBB. MIT. said they would pick up the cost of the parts $1370.00. They responded in about 34 hours, which is not bad. I have no idea how long it will take to get my set back. It has been gone for 3 weeks already. I will keep you updated as new information surfaces.

E-mail mdeaservice@mdea.com and tell them the problems you are having/have had w/ your TV. In addition, file a complaint (you can do this online) with the BBB of Irvine, California. You will be filing your complaint against "MDEA" (Mitsubishi Digital Electronics America). In addition, call Mits Consumer Relations @ 1-800-332-2119 and verbally file a complaint. Pursue a TV replacement with Consumer Relations and mention it in your e-mail also that you expect a comparable replacement. I would also do this w/ your ext. warranty people. I just received my new replacement (April, 200Cool model WD-60735. I wanted to go w/ the newest model out there, hoping at least SOME of these problems would be worked out. In your case, I would DEMAND to at least get the WD-65736 (closest new model to your original TV). I still plan to purchase an ext. warranty on the replacement tv also. You will get results if you follow these steps. It just takes a few weeks to go through it all. Good luck to you!
