Mitsubishi DLP Television WD-57831 Class Action Lawsuit

Jul 25, 2007 11:43AM PDT

Hello,

Is anyone interested in getting in on a class action lawsuit against Mitsubishi and their (known?) defective DLP televisions? I've seen numerous posts regarding lamps, ballast boards, DLP engines, total rebuilds, poorly assembled thermistor sensors, air flow problems, useless repairmen, etc. etc.

I too am experiencing the joy of making 3 Diamond Card payments as well as HD cable programming payments all for a television that stopped working back on June 30, 2007 and has had 2, now a pending 3rd, unsucessful attempts by incompetent "authorized repair centers" to fix it. ITS ONLY 6 MONTHS OLD!!! Randomly replacing parts without performing electronic troubleshooting is totally unacceptable.

Anyway, please let me know if anyone would be willing to sign some papers and get this thing going.

Thanks!

OHMYGAWD. I have finally hit the jackpot with this site. I bought this POS for $3300. I think it was 2 1/2 years ago? I have blocked it from my memory as it has been the BIGGEST nightmare of a TV set. The "black is black" feature is another way of saying you won't see a damn thing on the TV when it is dark in the show. I had everything replaced in the TV, then finally, after telling the useless rep in Orange County I was going to take it back to RC WIley and throw it on their steps, I got a new one. That was after 4 days off for them to come and change every friggin thing in the set. That cost me $1600 in lost wages which further irritated me. That new one crapped out 3 days later. Sadly, I could not talk them into giving me back my money so I got another one. I was considering an HD DVD player so I started reading some stuff and, although I am lost when it gets technical, I think the manual told me that the 1080p would not accept a 1080p signal. It further said, don't worry, there isn't much out there in 1080p anyway. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. I think I will buy the lower end Toshiba since it appears 1080p is indeed misleading. I really want someone to come into my house and steal this POS. I will NEVER buy a Mitsubishi again. My sister has the Sony XBR and I drool when I watch TV at her house (Good thing she lives in another city or I would really be depressed.) Count me in on a class action. I am a non practicing lawyer myself (member of 2 bars- including CA but do not practice) and do not know if this Shulman is our guy. Someone should check it out before we commit based solely on his saying he has done it. I am sure you all know, class action suits can take years and the only ones who really make out are the lawyers. I will be happy with my $3300 back and maybe the lost income. I figure it is an expensive mistake and I can't wait till I talk myself into giving this to charity and buying the Sony XBR. If I had kids I would have set this in the playroom and bought myself a real TV. I am so glad I am not alone. It truly made my day that it isn't just me. I thought I was the crazy one. I am sorry you all are suffering too, but I really feel so much better after venting and knowing I am not alone. Thank you all and please keep posting so I know where we stand.

WD-65732 Class Action? Count me in!!!
Mar 11, 2008 11:27AM PDT

I purchased a WD-65732 in March 2007, 1st bulb blew almost 6 months later, 2nd bulb blew March 2008. @ bulbs inside of a year! I propose Mits refund everyones money back since we all were told the same lies about the expected life of the lamps!

Not all retailers are the same.
Apr 4, 2008 3:48AM PDT

I would just like to say that I no longer have any problems with my WD62628. The regional manager for Tweeter in Houston Texas discovered the same problems when dealing with Mitsubishi. He was kind enough to let me swap out my TV with a new Sony. This appears to be a much better product and the 1080p inputs ACTUALLY work as advertised. Imagine that. I wish all of you good luck with Mitsubishi. I will never buy one of their products again.

I have a WD-62825 that was purchased 15 months ago. I have replaced 2 lamps and had it cleaned because of major dust problem. Now I have vertical white lines in uniform over my entire screen. I have emailed without response. I have talked with my store of purchase (Audio video specialist) and they are clueless...I am being told it is the dreaded Light engine..lennonbeav@yahoo.com

Mitsubishi DLP Projection TV Model
May 8, 2008 6:17AM PDT

We purchased a Mitsubishi 60" 3 yrs ago and just before the 2 yr warantee went out, the bulb and main light box went out. After the 3 full yrs the TV went dead... cost us $200 to tell us that the power supply and 2 computer boards need to be replaced and they don't know how long it will last. We paid over $5,300 for this TV... they just don't make TV's like they use too. Needless to say, we purchased a different brand.

Feb 27, 2008 7:59AM PST

Bought our WD-52631 Dec. 26, 2006. Had "airflow" problems that were
fixed on second visit by authorized repairman. Original bulb failed in June, 2007. Now that bulb has also failed in February, 2008. The TV is now out of warranty. Ouch! So, every 6-8 months, I will apparently have to invest another $250 into a TV that cost me $1900 to purchase. Talk about expensive entertainment. Is Mitsubishi going to step up and make this right? If not, I would hate to hold any Mitsubishi stock.

If there is a lawsuit, I would be very interested in joining. I'm not sure if pouring another $250 in for a bulb is a wise investment, after seeing the myriad of other problems.

I'm with you! Service men come over with no test equipment, slap in a new lamp and leave. Mitsubishi is NO help and now the sets out of warranty even though I've been having the same issues since it was new. Enough is enough! I got the 3 diamond card as well with no interest or payments for 15 months. I paid it off early and immediatly after had problems. Chad Donaldson, Merrick NY, psychosib002@aol.com

65831 Bulb
Jan 19, 2008 5:41PM PST

I purchased this set for $3500 and it's been 8 months and without any warning my picture just disappeared and now I am getting the red lamp light. Haven't had a chance to call Mitsubishi yet, I believe the bulb is under warranty, but judging by the stories on here, it seems that I will be enjoying more and more problems as time goes on. Funny how the salesman who sold me this TV never mentioned anything about the airflow problems. So glad he talked me out of buying the 52" Sharp aquos which was $500 cheaper. By the way I am in Alaska and I am 4 hours behind customer service time. I am also glad that I will not be watching the NFL playoffs on my $3500 tv. From the sounds of it I will not be watching the Superbowl either. Anybody know what it's like to be in a climate where the average temp is -20 or below and not have a working TV? Guess I am going to find out!!! I will update once I get more experience dealing with customer service and repair, but I have a feeling I will be more then happy to join the class action suit.

replacement bulb update
Jan 20, 2008 5:55AM PST

Well I reached the authorized dealer I purchased the TV from and no surprise they do not have my bulb in stock. Big Surprise, why would the authorized repair center have a bulb that goes in a large percentage of their TV's anyway. Insert sarcasm here! This store is in Fairbanks. They contacted their Anchorage store and are having one shipped up here and should be in on Tuesday the 22, my birthday! According to the salesman the older models(last years) the bulb housing has a small filter with tiny holes that gets clogged very easily and causes the bulb to overheat and burnt out. The new bulb replacement only out for a few months, has larger holes that will prevent this problem from reocurring. I was wondering if anybody has had this "new" bulb and was still having the same issues.

Mine was clogged as well....
Jan 20, 2008 7:28AM PST

Just checked the screen on the new lamp today and it was clean. I too agree that the clogged screen added to the short life of my 1st lamp.
My home is older and my electronics do collect dust, so I got a Honeywell Tower Air Purifier to help reduce dust around the display...
Going to monitor dust on/in all my equipment.

I got my lamp in less than a week from Mits, via their site on-line, as my dealer said they are backed ordered and "they" cannot get them as fast as a single consumer?

I am looking into buying just the bulb on-line and installing it in the lamp housing I now have...it is $80 instead of $270.
Happy Birthday as well!

Jan 21, 2008 7:32AM PST

I have a Mitsubishi 57732 that was "repaired" a few weeks ago with the airflow problem by my local TV repairman. Now the set has totally lost picture and the red light goes on and shuts the TV off. The painful part of this whole thing is this TV was a warranty replacement for a Sony Wega which alsp had a meriad of problems. I am really fed up.

Thanks for letting me vent.

Mitsubishi WD-52628 - Also scammed as 1080P
Jan 21, 2008 8:54AM PST

I purchased a Mitsubishi WD-52628 with the intent of adding a Blu-ray when they came down in price. I was also scammed by being told it would play in 1080P from HDMI. It says 1080P on the front, not 1080P upconverted to 1080i. Please keep me informed on the lawsuit. I will participate unless Mitsubishi corrects the problem.

WD-52628 lamp replacement issue
Jan 26, 2008 1:05AM PST

So I ordered a lamp AND cartridge from laptopsforless and got exactly that. Although it looks exactly the same, it won't fit. So I ended up taking the lamp out of the housing and putting it in the original housing and it worked. I turned the TV on and presto, I've got a nice bright picture again.

Problem: My whole screen is slanted down on the right side. I don't see any way to adjust this. Any help?

WD52628 fixed thanks to RIVERVALLEYELECTRONICS
Jan 31, 2008 1:42AM PST

Since I was getting the busy signal EVERY time I called Mitsubishi and Laptopsforless took my bulb and housing I ordered from them without troubleshooting my issue, I went to EBAY and ordered a good ol' OSRAM bulb for my TV from Rivervalleyelectronics. Not only did the bulb come within 2 days, with detailed instructions and a latex glove so as not to hurt the bulb with finger oil, but I still had the slanted screen and so I called them and they stated that it had to be my light engine out of whack.

So thinking back to my failed installation of the WRONG housing from laptopsforless, where I had pushed harder than I should to get the tabs to go in, I figured that I had offset the light engine. Once I had the OSRAM bulb, exact same one that my TV came with that lasted 2 years in my home and on display at the store I bought it from, I put it in the original housing, screwed it in and pulled the housing back a bit which reset the original placement of the light engine.

I couldn't be any happier with these guys. Quick to all lines of communication, half the price of others, third the price of Mitsubishi, and it's the EXACT OEM needed! Plus, they were the only place, including the web, to let me know it had to be the light engine out of line. If you do keep your TVs and you want a quality product from a top-rate place, go to these guys!

And since I've probably reduced the life of my light engine because of the CRAP housing/bulb that was shipped from laptopsforless, count me in for whatever you guys do if my WD52628 falls in the same category. I may go back to laptopsforless to discuss this issue though.

WD65732 Oh What a Night Mare
Jan 27, 2008 3:30AM PST

Ok Boys and Girls...

Please include me in on this as I am one to complain along side of you. I bought my WD65732 on 12-23-06 and I am on my 4th bulb. "Oh it is the dust sir".. You need to clean it out ever so often. This year allows more dust in. I have heard it all.. As well the service at Mitsubishi Customer Relations department sucks. 1-800-332-2119 and all this gets you is a run around. I have asked for a Supervisor to call me within the next 24 hours with no return call.

Mitsubishi is failing and we are suffering. They are telling me it is a "Ballast" that is failing. So I am suppose to believe this ? My first bulb went out in 5 months. The sesond and third 5 months later. The techs that came out said they had to do some minor adjustment and alteration. You see they are good butt the product is lacking. I spoke with many Mitsubishi Rep's on the phone, most at the lower level who are useless. A few have advance my call to some other area and I got some help. I was told that there is a small percentage of these DLP's that are flawed and as such have issues..

Does this mean I am getting mine replaced ? They mailed me another lamp so I am on my 4th bulb. They did say that they were going to send me out a letter extending a lamp to me when the next bulb goes out. You see my extended warranty which goes thru 12-23-11 has expired on 1-12-08 as I had to use it for my 4th replacement lamp. What was the purpose of buying this if it is gone within the first year, makes no sense....

I guess Mitsubishi knows very well that there is a percentage of "Flawed" DLP units and giving me that letter is an anticipated knowledge knowing thar the bulb will go out again.. Power issues ? Surges ? What is the cause, surely I am suppose accept the Ballast theroy and settle for this until the next bulb goes out...

Yes include me in your suit and pursuit against taken action against them.. As well I strongly urge each and every one write to the following C.E.O. to enhance his awareness..

Mitsubishi Corporation
"Attention"
C.E.O. Abe Masaharu
9351 Jeromino Rd
Irvine California
92618

Make it Return receipt as someone needs to sign for it. Start a tracking on this.. Keep all your notes, times, names and such of everyone you talk to.

You see this is pissing me off and surely I can tell it has you as well. We have invested our money into a product that is faliing us. I have owned Mitsubishi TV's for years and they have been reliable up till purchasing my DLP...

There is no reason I should be on my fourth bulb.

Please insist on satisfaction as well a resolution. If a "Class Action Lawsuit" is in order then let it be. It all starts here folks. Document and keep track as I am not one to sit back and allow this to happen to me. I just hate seeing my 65 inch get blocked by a 13 inch T.V. while I wait this out...

Mitsubishi Listen up as these people are disappointed as well I am. Make it right as expected..

Sincerely

WD-57831-UPDATE 1-27-08!
Jan 27, 2008 5:34AM PST

Well 2 weeks after a new lamp and 2 posts on this link...I have just had to have my WD-57831 professionally packed and delivered to an "authorized" Mits repair center, 120 miles away! Had I not been reading all the various problems, etc. I would not have taken such a step. I have been assured by the owner of renowned family electronics store, that he will personally speak with a friend @ Mits as to the problem(s). I will have some information next week and make another post with any findings.

Mitsubishi class action lawsuit
Feb 17, 2008 10:14AM PST

I am onboard with this if the plan still is in effect. We bought our DLP over 3 years ago when this was the new thing and have not had the clear pic we thought and replaced the bulb and now need a light engine. Seems wrong when you pay 4,000 buckarros for a TV and then all you get is the need to spend more mula to keep it working. If you are still doing this then I will sign on the dotted line.

We're ready to join as well!
Jan 28, 2008 1:06PM PST

We bought our WD57831 on 12/18/06 from Larson's in Medford, OR. after both of us having great Mitsubishi TV's in the past. We have had the heat sensor repaired under warranty and until this weekend the TV seemed to be working fine. We have the dreaded red lamp indicator burning brightly - and nothing else. Our story is as several who are posting here - we declined the extended warranty as unnecessary based on our past experience with this manufacturer. We also bought it from a well established electronic store, believing that they wouldn't sell junk. They're proving to be just like any other retailer - only interested in the initial sale - no service after the fact. I have ordered the bulb from Mitsubishi for $270, after one TV repair place wanted to charge me $300 for the bulb and $120 to install it! Sheesh!I'm definitely not excited to read these stories about 4 light bulbs in 18 months. I believe my redheaded husband would carry the TV back to the store and dump it on someone's toes! I plan on telling everyone I know about the Mitsubishi experience. Word of mouth does wonders, but would definitely be interested in hearing about a potential lawsuit.
