Missing vital drivers

by timotb / July 28, 2011 12:39 PM PDT

Compaq Presario V2000, XP pro after recent formatting then clean install.

From XP pro device manager I have yellow question marks with !The devices are 1. Mass Storage controller 2. SM Bus Controller3. Video Controller (VGA compatible)

We were discussing this in a previous thread, when I accidentally hit the "resolved" button. Sorry for the re-post.

Lost internet after removing AVAST and installing MS Security Essentials and MS Net Framework 4.0.

Update: Internet now working after using system restore. Takes longer than usual for icons to appear after reboot, drivers still missing as noted in 1st paragraph.

I gathered from previous messages that I am missing vital drivers. What is the easiest way to restore these drivers from scratch since I "nuked" everything including bin folders?

I see you have an open discussion at

I offered an example of a chat at but it appears you passed on that as well as not supplying the model number.

The V2000 is a series with too many models. No one can guess which one you have.

V2410US, if I am reading it right on the bottom. They don't exactly make it clear. And yes, I temporarily passed on that discussion mentioned earlier, just looked more complicated than I thought was necessary and momentarily moved on. I am looking at it next.

In the referenced discussion;msg5176213 the user wants to downgrade from Vista back to XP. In my case, this machine was originally XP Home edition, I formatted then installed XP Professional, SP2 then SP3 and all the updates. Just missing a few drivers. The links in the discussion reference a downgrade

Does not matter. Here's why.

The downgrade covered the exact steps and driver order to install XP. Only HP has that sort of detail.

However the drivers are over at let's see if I can find that model when I go to, click on drivers and put in the model V2410US.

NO! HP does not have all the drivers there. As you read in the linked discussion HP often has the drivers over on a SECRET FTP SITE. This is why I asked you to head to HP.COM and use the chat to find the drivers.

I found it easy to do that or just use the OS CDs the machine came with.
