Missing "Print" on Certain Websites

May 29, 2007 7:15AM PDT

On some websites, such as Snopes.com, I always get output that's largely a blank page. It's clear that there's text, but the text is missing. However, the page has occasional punctuation marks and/or "underscores" which are clearly links to other pages.

I'm using MSFT XP on a Dell pc.

Thanks very much for any help.

copy and paste into your word processor
May 29, 2007 7:46AM PDT

If using the browser's print command doesn't produce acceptable output, and there is no link to a printer friendly page, then I copy the desired text and paste it into my word processor.

If you need a fully featured word processor, then download and install OpenOffice.

Re: Missing "Print"

Thanks for your reply...I guess I was misleading in my subject line. The problem has nothing to do with "printing" the output; it's the output itself. I.E., on Snopes, I get largely blank pages of missing text...with a few punctuation marks and/or a few "underscores"..there may be a word or two or a letter...but not the full text.

I've contacted Snopes, and their reply was essentially that it's not their problem.

and because it probably is not their problem.
Snopes (one of my favorite debunking websites, by the way) has certain pop-ups and other things that do not past the scrutiny of the IEv7 browser set to high levels of security.

My view of Snopes pages come through just fine.

If you trust Snopes (and I do) you could first lower the security measures for the Snopes website to see if that helps. If it does you could then revert it back and then play with the various controls for security measures, to see if you can find the one or two items that is preventing the page to come through properly.

I removed my pop-up blocker for the Snopes website, but still no luck--although I did get pop-ups. I'm stumped...any further ideas?

I said lower the security for Snopes

I did not say to remove a pop-up blocker, per se, but to change the IEv7 security settings for Snopes. You can just temporarily lower it, and then try to connect to Snopes.

If it works then figure out why.
If it doesn't work then put the security settings back to where they were.

You might also have other protections enabled that are hindering you. I see some people run more than one virus scanning program (not that a virus scanning tool is causing this problem). But the reason I mention it is that some virus security suites (McAfee and especially Norton) are a bit too aggressive in trying to protect you. Then that conflicts with a 2nd virus scanner you might also be running. Some people enable Microsoft's Firewall (which is not that good) along with using the built-in (and superior) firewalls that are already in almost any router.

I don't think it is your print driver, as has been suggested, because as you already clarified, that your Subject line was misleading; that your problem is not observed while printing but while just viewing a webpage - on Snopes.

(I don't rule anything out, but that is low on my suspect list.)

Non-native resolutions on LCD's
May 30, 2007 6:12AM PDT

If you mean that the Web pages *display* blank blocks or sections that are blank, then that can be caused by a non-native LCD resolution.

If you are using an LCD display (desktop or notebook), then try setting the display to its *native resolution*. The empty sections should disappear.

Printer driver and example

Go to your printer manufacturer's website and download the latest XP driver for your printer. Install it.

I looked at a print preview of a Snopes.com article and printed from IE7 and Firefox 2.0. It printed just fine for me. Can you post a link for an article that doesn't work for you?
