cant get the kids old windows 98 comp to boot up- last night my son was deleting photos and when we turned it on we get the black boot up screen with 5 start options- safe mode , normal, etc. none work and we get the following missing or corrupt files message for these files::::
himem. sys
dblbuff.sys
ifshlp.sys

i tried booting wiht the windows disk but it sais to install windows and stops because it already detects windows- im not sure what to try or where to look for the answer.......

I believe you typed in E:\win98 and then pressed Enter and then typed DIR /W/P and got the cabs to show up...

I just want to make sure that the path is correct as I've typed it.

As for the product code, we also first have to see if you can get access to the C: drive....so once you check the cdrom files above, then type C: at the prompt and press Enter. That will take you to the C: drive, so now type DIR /W/P and press Enter and let us know if you can see a slew of files and directories show up there, too. Then I can get you to the product code if you need it because your sister forgot to give it to you.

You don'thave to sell it to the kids

If you are putting XP onto your own computer, don't do anything until you have managed to save everything you need for later on.......I can give you a list of things to save, and if you have a cdburner device, you can put nearly if not all of everything on one cd to bring it back later on.

The W98 disk can then legally be put on the kids' computer since there is only one copy of it being used. You didn't mention if this is a separate installation disk that already belonged to you or if it's the one from your sister.....or if it's on a vendor cd named recovery/restore disk. If it's a vendor disk, it is probably not going to work on the kids' system because it is geared specifically for your computer based on the hardware in it, but you can give it try. The most that will happen is that it stops the installation in its tracks when it discovers you don't have the same hardware in that other computer, or it will just balk a little, continue with the installation, and make you install your own hardware drivers for it.

If the W98 cd is yours make sure you have the product code key for it.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16837102151

For $93.00 [incl shipping]. They also sell the retail, which would be totally silly to buy. In this case the OEM CD is great it does not have any of the extra junk that some proprietary outfits add to there OEM CD. This is a 100% totally complete, 100% legal, activatable, et al Win XP Home operating system.

I buy the XP Pro version and have bought four of them so far for different computers. I always go fully legal.

Only way to get a much better price MIGHT be if you qualify for the academic discount. At newegg, click back to newegg's home and hover on software and see academic.
