by WilGrant / June 27, 2006 11:25 PM PDT

I have a problem when I turn on the computer it goes into DOS and then stalls out and I get a blinking cusor in the corner . the last thing done on the computer was task manger and it crashed and when I restarted it it loaded the banner page and then the blinking cusor NO WINDOWS XP ??Now when it starts up I
press ESC button and it takes me to a boot window and then I can start windows ??? How did I miss the link from DOS to Windows XP ??? I did try to do a restore on it thinking it would restore it back but I guess it only restores windows xp and not links to DOS .
does ANYBODY have any IDEA whats up with this #@%* thing !!!! I had A micro nightmare last night and got no sleep HELP !!!!!!!!!!!

Hi BOB ,
the computer I'm working on is a Compaq with AMD64
and WINDOWS XP . It didn't come with any CD and was PRELOADED .. They did do a backup disk but I think it will only restore Windows and not DOS link .
what do you know about a boot.ini file ??
we get the Compaq Banner and at the bottem it says
ESC Boot , press f11 for restore
I pressed the f11 and nothing happens and I seen ina book it said to hit f8 and I tryed it nothing happened
then Idid the ESC button and it wen to a boot menu
and I went to the first one for boot and it goes to WINDOWS xp then . But it use to go from the compaq Banner to windowsXP and now it doesn't .. I don't know if that helps you to understand my problem .if you have any more questions PLEASE ask I really would apperate any help I can get .Thank you Marty

C:>\ type in dir
It may show where your system restore is. Then you may have to put in something from a list that shows like WINXP.exe or startup. About 7 years ago, I had a Compaq Presario and 1/2 of the C: drive had system restore in it.It may be the F11 you mentioned. You can call Compaq and ask how to restore WINXP. My comouter has A Gateway Banner and at the bottom it begins to load up. It may be similar as you say hit ESC then F11

That's absolutely proper. XP does not use DOS to boot unlike the older Windows. Once we can forget about that or you can explain how DOS plays a role here the faster we can move along.

-> For now we only can explore what happens if you try to boot SAFE MODE. I don't tell how to do this since you can research that on Once in safe more we can explore more XP repair tools. But I haven't read if this machine can get there.
