Missing file windows root>\system32\hal.dll.

My dell demesion 2400 windows xp pro was working this am but when I got home this evening the screen was froze with nothing on it. I rebooted and the only thing that came up was Windows root > \ system 32 \hal.dll. missing. Please reinstall a copy of the file. Where can I get this file and how can I intall it since the comptuer is not working? Thank you for any info you can help me with.Don

The last symptom on this link is yours. There are a few suggestions from Microsoft for a resolution.

Hi,
Had similar problem when I upgraded to XP. Here's how I solved it: On startup click F2 and do altP to "Boot configuration" first is diskette drive. Change to your CD Rom drive and then boot up from the disk. It will now load. Startup again and change the boot config. back to diskette drive. Good luck.
