Question

Missing Data still taking up space on hardrive. Help Recover

Apr 28, 2018 9:20AM PDT

Okay, there is a lot to tell because I've already been troubleshooting this problem. If you are going to offer help, please read in full so you know what I've already tried. Thank you.

Alright, about a week ago I was deleting individual unneeded files from and external hardrive, as well as moving some files around though still upon that hardrive. At some point about 2TB of data disappeared from within a folder on the external hardrive. I have not written any new data onto that hardrive, and the memory of that data is still taking up space.

Now I don't believe that I accidently deleted it (though I won't rule it out) because the folder all of those files (video files mostly) were in was still there. And if I was going to accidently delete ALL those files, I'd have done it by accidently deleting the folder those files were in, no way in hell I'd have made the mistake of manually selecting all those files and deleting them.

At any rate, the missing 2TB of data is still taking up space on the external hard drive. As I did not intent to delete it (if it was even deleted), recovering it is what I'd prefer to do. I have downloaded a variety of recovery software such as disk drill, RecoverIT, and Recuva. And while each time it the recovery tools show a lot of files that I'd long since deleted both recently, and long ago, not a trace of ANY of the files within the 2TB folder of missing files in question ever appeared in any of the data recovery searches, not even with a deep scan (which took 74 hours to search the 8TB hardrive).

So, I am convinced that the files were not actually deleted. Even if they had been, they haven't been over written and I imagine that I'd have seen them by now. Also the data still is showing as being used on the drive.

He's the problem. I first checked to see if I had accidently hidden the files, but after using File Explorer and selecting to view all hidden files and folders, I found nothing.

Something else that is curious, inside the external hardrive (8TB Western Digital Red), the complete file folders only add up to about 4.5 TB's of data. However when I search the properties of the external hardrive itself, it shows upwards of 6.5 TB's of used space.

So I believe that the data is still there, even though I can not see it. If it was accidentally moved into a different folder, the folders inside the external drive would add up to the correct amount of data, though it does not. I've also searched multiple files that had been in the original folder, and search results yelled no results.

Most post I've seen about missing data has always been resolved from either data recovery software at least showing where the data had been deleted, or people learning finding that the missing content was inside a hidden folder. Neither of these seem to be the case in my particular situation. I've reached the limit on what I know, and I would greatly appreciate any help or advice on what I could try next that I've not already tried. I apologize if this was a lot to read but I wanted to include as much information on my situation as possible.

Again, the external hardrive is a 8TB Western Digital Red. The computer I am using is a M14 Alienware laptop with windows 10 installed.

Thanks for the quick reply!

I've downloaded Treesize, though I won't be able to test anything just yet, about to head into work. If you wouldn't mind, could you elaborate on the second point to your reply? Most of it is alien to me. I know a bit about using computers, but I'm by no means an expert. Mostly self-taught/learn as I go. Thanks in advance.

Is an old story about getting a self contained bootable OS for those times where you need something else to look at drives and machines when Windows isn't working.

There are no install steps, there is no learning Linux as you explore with a file explorer and copy much the same as you did in Windows. It is not considered advanced work or only for experts.

Answer
Try restroing the folder to a previous version

Hi Baron

Wanted to check if you have also tried restoring your folder to a previous version. You can right click on that folder where the videos were in and go to properties. There you can see the option for previous version. If any previous version is available you can recover from there.

Next you have mentioned that you have tried few recovery softwares like disk drill and recuva. Have you tried going for any paid version of any software. Most of the times free versions have their limitations. Some good ones are from stellar, wondershare and Easeus.

Let me know if you are able to recover your videos thru these steps else will suggest some other solutions.
