Question

Missing cd/dvd drive in device mgr and SATA list in bios

Mar 16, 2018 12:26PM PDT

Hi all, major problems!

No cd dvd drive in explorer or device manager. Tried a bunch of the regular fixes including firmware update and new ec update for my msi laptop.

Drive spins up with a disk in and is listed as a boot device in bios but not on the list of SATA drives in bios?

I'm not much of a tech person, didn't even know there was a bios till I started looking up this problem.

Anyone any ideas?

Just to confirm what I've tried..
- show hidden items in device manager
- uninstall SATA controller under ata/atapi in device manager and restart
- check registry for up lower filters. Not there.
- added the new reg key enumdevice1
- firmware update
- ec flash
- all Windows updates
- Windows troubleshooter
- reinstall Windows

None of the above have worked, hope someone can help! Many thanks

Answer
I've seen this.

For some reason some makers only list hard disks and SSD drives in the BIOS. If it's missing in Windows it's usually due to whoever installed Windows forgetting the motherboard drivers.

Thanks for reply..

Hi thanks for replying.. Do I need then to check the drivers for the motherboard? Seems odd given I reinstalled windows and the laptop just does it automatically with the push of a button. Also it used to work fine, though I couldnt say when the problem occurred since there was a big gap between the last time I used the drive and noticing it missing recently.. There wasn't any reinstalling or uninstalling of anything like a motherboard in that time though..

that doesn't matter if....

...you allowed windows to update itself. If so, then changes were made.
