Go to Start > Run > type "msconfig" w/o the quotes > click OK. Select the Boot.ini tab > Bootlog > Apply > OK. Restart the computer.

Hope this helps.

thanks charlie but afraid that did not solve my problem it says if i want to change the vista bootlog to use bcdedit.exe any idea what that does or where to get it? clicking on what you told me the comp done a reboot but still booted straight into xp without givung me the option of xp or vista think i might have to re-install vista to get the new bootlog back have a feeling my old one will be deleted
thanks again for your help

Try going in to msconfig Boot.ini tab and increase the Timeout in seconds.

Not familiar with using vista, but there may be some options at http://vlaurie.com/computers2/Articles/bootini.htm .
There is a para at the bottom of the page regarding Vista with a link to a tool that is supposed to make the edit easy.

If you have any important files in Vista, I would wait a bit longer to see if a solution can be found.
